I have, unfortunately, failed to keep track of my flist. If you posted something important and I missed it... I'm sorry. Please let me know what it was!

This week is a very good one.

This week:
- we got a new Prime Minister!
- I finished my cancer treatment!
- I am turning 40!
- I will get to see Hamilton!

Now, if the board game I've ordered will hurry up and arrive already, it'll be the Best Week Ever.
deird1: Dawn drinking a milkshake (Dawn milkshake)
Haven't got anything major to post, but I thought I'd give a general update on my life...

Pandemicville

The kidlets are back at school/kinder. Otherwise everything is still cancelled. Most of that's fine, but I am desperately missing:
1) church
2) my roleplaying group

Musical Aspirations

After a lot of consideration, I have taken the plunge and bought a button accordion. When it arrives I will (briefly) be the proud owner of THREE accordions - before selling my second piano accordion. Then I just need to figure out how on earth one plays a button accordion...

Cinema and so forth

I have been watching The Good Place, and enjoying it much more than I thought I would. (Only bought the first season because I saw a five-second clip of Ted Danson smiling evilly, which greatly impressed me.)

Also, SBS has been rebroadcasting Stargate, so I'm watching that on a weekly basis as new episodes become available. I'm currently being weirded out by the early-episode differences (no ray guns, no spaceships, no Thor, no crystals), and also very annoyed by it (there is a reason my LJ has a Stargate is Annoying Me tag).

Meanwhile, my friends gifted me a Disney+ subscription. So while I am waiting for Hamilton, I'm watching all the MCU movies that I never got around to seeing. They're quite fun, for the most part.

The Kidlets

Both are lovely, charming, and delightful individuals. Both are also currently banished outside on serious time out because they are ANNOYING. School holidays have only just started, and I expect to be utterly crazy by the end of them.
deird1: Dawn looking at Spike, with text "badder than you" (Dawn badder than you)
I am playing a new D&D character that makes everyone in my group double-take and say "Wait – she isn't a rogue?"

My character is a cleric, who worships the Iron God from Ptolus (Google is your friend). So, she is fascinated by technology, traps, locks, and all things mechanical.

Our group is rogueless; they are relying on me to rogue for them. (And heal them, because, yes, I am the cleric.)

What my brain does at 2 am:
"Ooh! There could be a superhero who can shift her own gravity, so that she can walk up the side of skyscrapers! Cool! I could call her... SKYWALKER."

What my brain does at 3 am:
"Wait. Skywalker. Star Wars. Damn."

What my brain does at 4 am:
"So, should I change her name? Or should I have her repeatedly introduce herself as Skywalker so that she can be really pissed off when everyone thinks she's referencing Star Wars? Yeah, that would be hilarious..."

Fascinating stuff, I know...

I have seen quite a number of conversations on the internet in the last couple of years, all about people wearing shoes indoors. Inevitably, the conversation is split between two groups. Let's call them:
1) Sockpuppets (aka people who take off their shoes when they enter a dwelling)
2) Ruffians (aka people who wear shoes indoors, the barbarians)

Have kept my unbroken streak of seeing Star Wars movies for the first time in the cinema. In this case, that means Kidlet Secunda has also been to her very first Star Wars movie. She slept through most of it, but watched a couple of scenes in fascination while I changed her nappy.

On that subject... HELL YES was that a Star Wars movie! WOO!

Life has been an endless series of Christmas events (including five different present opening occassions for Kidlet Primus). BUSY. We're now about to go away for a week with my family. Not sure if this will be relaxing, or extra busy. We shall see.

I have downgraded my phone (to a paper diary, an iPod, and a old-style mobile that actually makes phone calls as its primary function), and upgraded my car (to a hatchback with parking assistance, bluetooth, cruise control, and, oh yes, the ability to fit two children - kind of important, that). Very happy with both decisions.

Having so much fun dressing Kidlet Secunda up in pretty outfits. Girls clothes are fun! Plus, dresses are so much easier for nappy changing. I can see why boys used to wear them pre-toilet training.

The entire world has given me chocolate for Christmas. It's yummy, but not terribly good for me... Oh well... *munches*
deird1: Eugene, trying to "smoulder" Rapunzel into setting him free (Eugene smoulder)
Don't you hate it when you have an excellent idea for a blog post, but by the time you actually sit down to post it, you've forgotten what it was? *sighs*

So, random life update:
- Am almost finished with Latin book 5, at which point I will be a (self-described) Advanced Latin Student, ready for such majestic heights as fairytales-in-Latin, Harry-Potter-in-Latin, and short-excerpts-from-classic-Latin-texts-with-the-translation-right-there-in-case-I-get-confused. Very awesome.

- Am feeling very organised, because all my Christmas presents are wrapped.

- The boy is now walking all day, and getting rather adventurous. Fun, but slightly exhausting.

- We are between heatwaves, so having nice sunny weather. Most of my plants have survived so far.

- The husband is now halfway through season 3 of Farscape. He's enjoying it, most of the time.

The problem with not posting regularly is that I then feel like I can't post anything until it's the BEST POST EVER ...so I don't post at all.

Stuff:
- I swear, the scene in Half Blood Prince where the vampire comes to Slughorn's party - Rowling clearly wrote it purely so that she could have her Italian vampire called "Sanguini" and giggle at her awesome Latin pun.

- My son is now walking and talking - for a given definition thereof. He is, as always, extremely cute.

- Despite being halfway through Murdoch Mysteries, Elementary, Newsroom, and Despicable Me, I am eagerly rewatching Heroes - which I haven't seen in its entirety (ie: the first season, which is ALL THAT EXISTS) since it was first broadcast. It's kind of awesome.

- Finally finished the blanket that took me two damn years, and can move on to other crochet projects that interest me a bit more. (Steadfastly ignoring the cross-stitch project that's been half-complete for four years now.)

- Will put Christmas tree up today. Will then spend three weeks keeping one-year-old from destroying Christmas tree.

(Excuse me. The kidlet is demanding that I read him a story.)

My old computer having finally died, I've bought a new one. Behold, my ability to type a paragraph in less than half an hour!

The kidlet is doing well, and is semi-mobile. He's not crawling yet, but is moving enough to grab random objects before I've realised that he's now two metres away from where I left him.

I've decided that Elementary is the best show of all the shows - at least this week. Miles better than most Sherlock Holmes incarnations, at least, due to his wonderful ability to not be a total arse to everyone he encounters.

We're about to start a weekly, parent-friendly roleplaying group at our house. Haven't done this in nearly a decade, and now I suddenly have to create a session-long Firefly campaign out of thin air! Help!

I've ditched book 5 of my Latin course, and have raced back to book 1 to revise. Am now no longer feeling like a dunce, but instead marvelling at my ability to speak extremely basic Latin with such finesse.

...I totally have time to sign up for this year's Remix, right? Right?
deird1: a chibi of Kitty from P&P, with text "what do you keep winking at me for?" (Kitty winking)
Things in my life right now:

- I have started eating porridge for breakfast*. It is YUMMY.

- We went to a different church this week, which was awesome. Our regular church is quiet, solemn, and rather lifeless - as well as being quite challenging to meet people. This church is friendly, enthusiastic, and SINGS WITH GUSTO, which we've missed a great deal. (Not a comment on worship style, precisely. But when your church service feels more like a funeral, it becomes rather wearying.)

- The internet went down yesterday, taking away half my possible activities. *pines* Thankfully, it has now returned.

- Brought a huge amount of wool to Germany with me, with the intention of making a huge blanket that would
a) keep me warm
b) occupy my crocheting time for several months, in case I couldn't find more wool here.
I am now utterly sick of my half-finished blanket, and am plotting trips to wool shops to buy supplies for making baby things. It would be rather ludicrous to teach myself to crochet and not make my baby crocheted things, after all.

- Have finished Veronica Mars (except the movie). It's rather fun.

- Am getting kicked awake at 3am every morning, and thus missing out on a proper night's sleep. Can't wait until this kid is born, so that it can actually be put down away from my internal organs once in a while.

* My appetite being somewhat increased by pregnancy, it's actually my third breakfast of the day, following yoghurt and cereal.

It's supposed to be hot today. Being aware of this, I am currently sitting in my freezing cold house, shivering, and reminding myself that turning the heater on would be a boneheadedly stupid thing to do.

Saw Agents of Shield the other night. It... reminded me of Torchwood.

By which I mean that it had the central leader guy who knew exactly how to handle the other characters and did nothing wrong, and a whole bunch of other characters whose entire personality could be summed up by their jobs. There's "tech guy", "kung-fu chick", and "secret agent man" – but, so far, I know nothing else about any of them. Are they sarcastic? Do they like chocolate? Have they ever been really bored? It's a mystery.

So far? Not intrigued. Not enough to keep watching. I like investigation-of-the-week shows, but every show like that that's ever drawn me in has done so through the characters – and, so far, I haven't seen any of those.

(Yes, still planning to fic... Rather delayed by life...)
deird1: Dawn drinking a milkshake (Dawn milkshake)
Haven't really posted much lately. Life has kinda been getting in the way.

So. General update*:

- I am looking for work, and also freelancing.
- Freelancing costs a LOT. All my clients keep saying "We want to pay you $500! But first you need to spend $300 on an essential piece of software, okay?"
- I have been watching much tv, including Leverage, My Little Pony, Once Upon A Time, Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and Zombieland. They all rock.
- The boyfriend is back in Australia, which is extremely awesome.
- Although I am terribly religious, and not at all concerned with such trivialities as shiny and delicious presents, I must report a total of 14 Easter eggs, 1 Ferrero Rocher, and 5 bunnies. SO MUCH CHOCOLATE. AND ALL FOR ME.
- Autumn has finally started taking over from our ridiculously long summer. About time! Unfortunately, it's been so long that I've completely forgotten how to dress for cold weather. I keep on putting on pretty outfits and then going "But I can't wear a jumper! It won't match!" and nearly freezing to death.
- I was sick for a couple of weeks, and so have spent the last 10 days off dairy. I miss my cereal - with an intense, burning passion that I'd never realised flattened bits of corn could inspire in me.
- Life is busy. But good.

* HIMYM fans will understand why I felt it necessary to smartly salute and murmur "General Update!" in the middle of writing this blog post.

many things

deird1: a chibi of Kitty from P&P, with text "what do you keep winking at me for?" (Kitty winking)
Quiet evening at home. Hurrah! Haven't had one of those in quite a while.

TV I am watching
Recently, I have been re-watching episodes of:
- Sarah Connor Chronicles
- the Lizzie Bennet Diaries
- Once Upon A Time
- My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
- Leverage
- Yes Minister

All of them are very awesome, but in very different ways.

Lent...
...will start in about a week. In previous years, I have done many different things, including giving up chocolate, television, and unnecessary spending. The unnecessary spending worked well; the chocolate less so. It's not that I can't give up chocolate - but instead of making me focus on God, or on how little I need possessions, or on more spiritual things, it just makes me focus on how much I love chocolate. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

This year, I'm being a bit restrictive: I'm sticking to only fair trade tea and chocolate. Inconvenient? Focusing on other people in financial difficulty? A good discipline? Yep, yep, and yep. We'll see how it goes.

(One year, I'm so going to give up electric lighting. But that will not be this year.)

My washing
I just did it. For the first time in a month.

I can tell this, because my clothes-horse is now holding 25 pairs of undies. I didn't even realise I had 25 pairs of undies...

iPad Apps
There are so many.

Just about anything you could ever think of trying to plan - seriously, anything - will have an app already waiting, with in-built checklists ready to go. Very helpful. (Except that the app will be totally convinced that no-one could ever colonise Mars without inventing faster-than-light travel first, and will keep putting little "remember to install your FTL drives!" reminders in your to-do list, even though you have no intention of doing anything of the sort. Kind of irritating - and makes me feel like I'm terribly untrendy because I'm not fixated on conquering hyperspace and just want to get to the fun part of the Mars colonisation project*.)

* This, for the record, is the bit where we discover the ruins of the ancient Martian civilisation underground, and decipher the codes for creating wormholes using Martian technology...
deird1: Rapunzel, doing a jigsaw puzzle (Rapunzel jigsaw)
Been rather MIA lately. This is because I've been busy...

...watching Leverage seasons 3 and 4. Which means, for the first time in living memory, I'm up to date with American tv and can read websites without worrying about spoilers. For at least the next week or so.

...cuddling nephews. Gotta say, even though it was annoying having Nathan so upset that I had to sit there and cuddle him for two straight hours, it was also kinda lovely. I've had to deal with wailing, tears, and fretting from each of my nephews - and it's something I treasure even if it's a pain.

...trying to find a job. My current one is almost certainly going to disappear soon (widespread redundancies, and my role's expendable), and despite my limited experience I'm pretty good at this whole editing thing, so there's got to be someone out there who'll hire me. Right?

...making fun things from wool. Crochet is ADDICTIVE. I've finished my beginners book - and am now trying out some of the trickier patterns. (The easy tricky patterns, though. I'm not confident enough to try the truly diabolical ones.)

...missing the boyfriend, who is still in Europe. *pines*

...teaching Sunday School. With lots of seven year olds who can run riot quite effectively. This week, I have to tell the story of Ruth. Which will be difficult.

...reading books I've read before. Murder mysteries are my comfort food.
deird1: Twilight Sparkle's hot air balloon (MLP:FiM hot air balloon)
Things that are awesome:

- my cat
- Easter eggs
- the boyfriend
- sewing machine cabinets
- central heating
- baby goats
- feeding lettuce to baby goats
- my cat, purring
- my cat, cuddling me
- nice warm beds
deird1: Dawn drinking a milkshake (Dawn milkshake)
I haven't been posting much of late, mostly through lack of stuff to say and fun ways to say it... But this means you're all a bit behind with my life.

So, here goes:
work stuff )

neffies )

other randomness )

...that's about all, for now. Have a good day, folks.
deird1: Willow's pencil-stuck-in-a-tree, with text "I don't have issues" (pencil issues)
1) Cats who wake me up at 5am.

2) Internet Explorer 8, and its ludicrous system of opening sites. (When I'm reading a site and try to open a bookmarked site, it opens it in the tab I'm using - making the site I was reading go away. When I open a new tab and then hit the bookmark, it will open the bookmarked site in ANOTHER NEW TAB, and leave me with THREE tabs open instead of two. What on earth?)

3) People calling grown women "girls".

4) Whoever decided that having free Mentos at work was a good idea. I KEEP EATING THEM ALL. *has no self-control*

5) Proofreading jobs where I have to read bad writing and not comment on how bad it is.

6) Cats who wake me up at 5am. Seriously.
deird1: Angel singing, with text "ceci n'est pas un chanteur" (this is not a singer) (Angel (french singer))
The Bad:

- Lilac's case is either terminal, or very expensive. Trying to decide whether I can afford a new computer.

- [personal profile] dr_carrot is in Mildura, and I miss her!

- I'm now getting paid monthly, which is causing my bank account to dwindle alarmingly, pre-next pay. My rent is due, but the money hasn't arrived yet...

- Exciting "daybed" arrived today, two months after being ordered... with a big piece missing! Grrr!

The Good:

- I got huge amounts of work done, and am feeling accomplished.

- My saxophone skills are improving, despite my lack of practice.

- I'm over halfway through my cross-stitch! Woo!
deird1: Rapunzel, hanging just above the ground, afraid to touch down (Rapunzel nearly to the ground)
I came up with three utterly brilliant blog entries last night, and then woke up and realised that none of the stuff they were talking about had really happened...

Also, I'm fairly sure I also came up with another blog entry that would have been true - but now I can't remember what it was. Hmmpf.

In other news:
- Elf and Prince are fine with each other, as long as Prince doesn't violate Elf's personal space bubble with a radius of about a metre. Prince deals with this by staying exactly a metre out of reach - and looking hopefully at Elf.

- The jobs are both still really fun - but taking a lot out of me. Hence the sad lack of blogging.

- [community profile] nuggan! If you're grumpy, go join!

- Sadly (care of last night's dream) my house does not include a secret lair with a funky shower. Happily, the tragic lack of secret lair also means that my hencemen are not trying to kill me over the funky shower...
deird1: Rapunzel, doing a jigsaw puzzle (Rapunzel jigsaw)
I spent several days being sick. I am now not sick, but have absolutely no voice left as a result of having coughed so much. Hopefully no-one will urgently need me to tell them things for the next few days...

Went to a wedding on Saturday. They had activity bags for the kids who came to the reception - which included colouring pencils, stickers, bubble mix, lollies, and disposable cameras with a "scavenger hunt" list of photos they should try to take during the evening. Such a good idea! First reception I've seen that had kids and didn't have extremely bored kids wailing to go somewhere else.

Tangled is still a wonderful movie of brilliance. I now have icons.

My cat missed me while I was away (the wedding was in Adelaide), but he also missed being outside. He's spent the last few hours meowing desperately to be let outside because he hasn't seen outside in days, and then instantly meowing desperately to be let inside because he hasn't seen me in days. Maybe I should have just gone outside with him?

Much unpacking still to be done. It'll have to wait until tomorrow: I am hereby allowing myself a relaxing evening of doing nothing much.
