For the first, and probably last, time in my life, I'm going to America!

The plan is currently Washington DC – New York City – somewhere – Niagara Falls - Toronto - Detroit. Then we're staying in Detroit for about a week before heading home.

This is all happening in just over a week, so I am frantically booking EVERYTHING. It's astonishing how long a list I can come up with of Things To See In America, without even thinking. So far, we're seeing the Smithsonian, the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers Memorial, the Museum of Natural History, and a Broadway show. Unfortunately, given the time frame we won't get to see the Capitol building, but we're going to check out all the monuments!

If anyone's got a suggestion of what I should do for two days while driving from New York City to Niagara, please chime in!

Yay, congrats on your big trip!

In case you're not aware, the Smithsonian is actually a cluster of museums, including the Museum of Natural History. I would say the other really popular ones are the Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum, but there are bunches more. The US Capitol building is right in that same area, though, like a ten-minute walk, so maybe you can see it after all?

It's been ages since I was anywhere near upstate NY but from memory the Finger Lakes are lovely wine country!

Stay a few days longer and catch the total eclipse. But not at the Niagara Falls, that place is booked so tight that already locals are renting out their lawns and driveways for campers. Also, bring warm clothes. It might be warm in DC, but it is spring and the closer you get to Canada, the more likely it is to snow.

That is fortunate! And I assume you already have a place to stay in Buffalo at that time.

Ok this may be totally niche but I really liked the Erie Canal museum in Syracuse if that's near your route. I went in 2000 though, so worth checking if still there!

I am extremely sad that I won't be able to make it up to DC to see you, but I am very excited for you to enjoy some of the good things about my country! That's going to be a whirlwind of a trip!

Do you have family in Detroit that you're staying with?
