deird1...using D&D classes and alignments
For reference, see this post where I allocated classes and alignments to every character.
In season 1 (or most of it), Crichton, Aeryn, D'Argo, Zhaan, and Rygel are being chased by Crais.
That is: a whole lot of good people, along with a lawful neutral guy, are being chased by a neutral fighter.
This presents some problems.
1) There are no evil characters.
Which limits the amount of sheer evilness that they can come across. Sure, you can have occasional evil alien-of-the-week characters, but they will never really have the same impact.
2) The only real in-crew problem is lawful.
Rygel is great, but usually his function in the narrative is to wait until there's a problem, and then be self-serving in reaction to it. He very rarely creates the problem.
3) The bad guy is a fighter.
So, he wants to fight the good guys. Crichton vs Crais is always a situation where Crais attacks, and Crichton talks/tricks/bluffs his way out of it, and then Crais attacks, and then Crichton talks/tricks/bluffs his way out of it...
But then comes season 2. In which Crichton, Aeryn, D'Argo, Zhaan, Rygel, and Chiana are being chased by Scorpius. The crew now has a chaotic neutral person, and the bad guy is an evil bard.
Where Rygel reacts to problems by being self-serving, Chiana creates chaos just by walking past. Far more useful, narratively speaking.
And Scorpius is evil. Which is helpful. But his main benefit to the narrative is the fact that he's a bard. Which means we get regular situations where Scorpius tries to talk/trick/bluff Crichton into giving him wormhole tech, and then Crichton counters by talking/tricking/bluffing Scorpius, and so on. Far more interesting to watch.
