So... a few weeks ago, the husband came home and told me about a new work opportunity.
My initial reaction was to curl up in a ball and cry. But then again, my initial reaction to anything new is to curl up in a ball and cry. Heck, you could offer me sunshine and puppies, and I would still freak out, shriek "No! Change!" and run away.
My second reaction was a bit more positive.
And, three weeks later, we've finally got the details a bit more sorted.
So...
*takes deep breath*
From April 2014 to April 2015, we're going to be living in Michigan.

Michigan is too cold for my delicate bones, but it should be quite an adventure.

Date: 2013-10-28 09:06 pm (UTC)I'm hoping to have time to travel the whole country. It'll be about my only real opportunity to ever see America, so I'm going to make the most of it.
I don't know very much about Michigan, or what is/isn't worth seeing. Any suggestions?

Date: 2013-10-28 09:22 pm (UTC)Also, everyone's talking about how cold it is, but it's not like Antarctica or something, and summers tend to be hot and humid. I don't know what the weather's like where you live in Australia, but in Michigan, the weather often changes drastically from one hour to the next. When I left Michigan, I thought it was weird how little people talked about the weather and only checked it once a day. Layers are your friend in all seasons -- it can get warm in February and cool in July.

Date: 2013-10-29 07:10 pm (UTC)Jumping across the border, as brin_bellway suggests, is also a good idea. Lake Superior Provincial Park is gorgeous.

Date: 2013-10-29 03:37 pm (UTC)Why stop there? The US/Canada border is pretty open, and compared to cross-country trips, not that far away. (*ahem*)
(How do you feel about quinces? Because I'm not 100% convinced they really exist, and after a year on this continent you might start feeling the same.)

Date: 2013-10-28 09:16 pm (UTC)Snow is awesomely wonderfully exciting and fun...until the amusement wears off after a few days, and you find yourself as cold as you never thought you could possibly be, where it hurts to breathe and your face is numb and the wind cuts right through everything. You're wearing twenty layers outside, and stripping off for every superheated building you enter.
That said, stepping in squeaky snow is the best fun. And there's nothing wrong with hibernating indoors all the time! :-D
So will you be keeping house while he works, or maybe get something local if the opportunity presents itself?
And most importantly of all...will you put Elf into care, or will he go quarantine and join you there?
In any case, I would like a postcard once you're there, please. My collection of...three could do with some expanding.

Date: 2013-10-28 09:22 pm (UTC)I mostly had problems with riding a bike on snow. Which... less likely, this time – but I'm going to have to figure out how to drive on snow. Which scares me.
Elf will probably stay here, with my parents. And I'll probably still be editing for some Aussie people (and possibly for some US clients, if I'm allowed), but will spend the majority of my time being housewifely.

Date: 2013-11-12 02:13 am (UTC)I second Mackinac Island (where my parents happily honeymooned). That entire corner of the state - the Upper Peninsula and the northwest region of the LP - has totally gorgeous nature and quaint small towns. One of the best summer trips my family ever took. I also recommend Chicago if you like anything remotely urban.
THE best summer trip my family ever took was a three-week trek driving from my grandparents' in eastern Tennessee to the Grand Canyon to my aunt's near L.A. We stopped in Nashville (despite my hatred of country music, not bad), camped in a gorgeous site in New Mexico (Bluewater Lake State Park), got lost visiting Chaco Canyon (a desert city abandoned almost a thousand years ago), drove on Americana-laden Route 66, toured Flagstaff, swam near Santa Monica Pier in LA, briefly saw Vegas before crossing the endless starry brightness of Utah and wild rivers and mountains and wildflowers of Colorado... it was wonderful.
And drove home that it's really, really hard to afford more than one Giant Exploratory Trip in a year, so you really have to know what you want. Continental travel gets expensive.
So I have listed what I love within easy distance of Ann Arbor, and listed what I love best. I will add that my sister and her husband are entirely in love with NYC, my parents in love with San Francisco, myself in love with the history in the Jamestown/Yorktown/Williamsburg area of Virginia, that my family would not recommend Disney World at the top of any list but can endorse the Wizarding World of Harry Potter... and I hope you can find what you love best here!
P.S. - I find that between Ann Arbor and Detroit lies a small town called Canton. I wonder if perhaps it is in want of a hero?
