So... a few weeks ago, the husband came home and told me about a new work opportunity.

My initial reaction was to curl up in a ball and cry. But then again, my initial reaction to anything new is to curl up in a ball and cry. Heck, you could offer me sunshine and puppies, and I would still freak out, shriek "No! Change!" and run away.

My second reaction was a bit more positive.

And, three weeks later, we've finally got the details a bit more sorted.

So...

*takes deep breath*

From April 2014 to April 2015, we're going to be living in Michigan.

Youngest sis actually lives in Michigan.

The part she's in is very, very white bread.

Michigan is too cold for my delicate bones, but it should be quite an adventure.

I grew up in Michigan. Where are you going to be living? Are you going to have time to do any traveling within the state?

I don't know very much about Michigan, or what is/isn't worth seeing. Any suggestions?

Ahem ...

Mackinac Island and the Mission Point area. That's two separate trips, but very worth it. The environs of Mission Point are the most beautiful place in the world, imo.

Also, everyone's talking about how cold it is, but it's not like Antarctica or something, and summers tend to be hot and humid. I don't know what the weather's like where you live in Australia, but in Michigan, the weather often changes drastically from one hour to the next. When I left Michigan, I thought it was weird how little people talked about the weather and only checked it once a day. Layers are your friend in all seasons -- it can get warm in February and cool in July.

Oh and also! The Detroit Institute of Art is phenomenal. Their Dutch and 19th century American collections are particularly good.

Jumping across the border, as brin_bellway suggests, is also a good idea. Lake Superior Provincial Park is gorgeous.

I'm hoping to have time to travel the whole country.

Why stop there? The US/Canada border is pretty open, and compared to cross-country trips, not that far away. (*ahem*)

(How do you feel about quinces? Because I'm not 100% convinced they really exist, and after a year on this continent you might start feeling the same.)

Wow. Exciting but you won't half feel the cold! [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo and [livejournal.com profile] elsaf are both Michiganders.

You say that now but just wait... Ann Arbor (or A2 as we natives call it) is COLD in the Winter. I went to school there for 2 years and it was frigid. So buy lots and lots of wooly things.

Wow!!

Snow is awesomely wonderfully exciting and fun...until the amusement wears off after a few days, and you find yourself as cold as you never thought you could possibly be, where it hurts to breathe and your face is numb and the wind cuts right through everything. You're wearing twenty layers outside, and stripping off for every superheated building you enter.
That said, stepping in squeaky snow is the best fun. And there's nothing wrong with hibernating indoors all the time! :-D

So will you be keeping house while he works, or maybe get something local if the opportunity presents itself?
And most importantly of all...will you put Elf into care, or will he go quarantine and join you there?

In any case, I would like a postcard once you're there, please. My collection of...three could do with some expanding.

Excitingness! I look forward to lots of 'how America isn't like Australia' in condiments, terms for garden furniture and much else. I know what you mean about change, but otoh, temporary change!

Heh, yes it will. BTW, I'm hoping to spend a good chunk of time next Northern Hemisphere summer in Seattle, collaborating with my old colleagues on my current research and catching up with family. It would be a lovely time for that ferry-ride-space-needle-visit... :D

How exciting! Will keep track of your posts to see if you're going to be touristing (is that a word?) in my area.

I'm the same way with change (with my inital reaction always being 'NO!'). But hopefully being here in the US will be an exciting adventure for you.

I was born in Ann Arbor, but I don't know much about it other than it gets horribly cold in winter and the University of Michigan is there. And I believe it gets pretty in the fall. I also vaguely remember my parents saying something about going on a tour of some brewery that had samples and stuff. But that was nearly forty years ago.

I used to live in Ann Arbor. It's nice enough, but super cold and kind of small and grey by my standards. In a weird coincidence, I'll be up in Michigan for a conference in May 2014.

Congratulations, of course! But... didn't you just buy a house? They say that the most stressful things that can happen to you include buying a house, changing jobs and (I would assume) changing countries. You don't believe in doing things by halves do you?! :-)

Oooh, Ann Arbor, Michigan is where I live! I can say we have some excellent parks, breweries and restaurants. And if you get here in April, you'll get to learn your way around before the town is overrun with students and football fans in the fall.

Ordinarily, I try not to do drive-by commenting on blogs where I only lurk occasionally (followed you here from Slacktivist a while back), but the fact that you might be moving to the town where my parents met, fell in love, and married is just too important to pass up. Ann Arbor really is gorgeous, and you'll be getting there at a good time to start falling in love with it.

I second Mackinac Island (where my parents happily honeymooned). That entire corner of the state - the Upper Peninsula and the northwest region of the LP - has totally gorgeous nature and quaint small towns. One of the best summer trips my family ever took. I also recommend Chicago if you like anything remotely urban.

THE best summer trip my family ever took was a three-week trek driving from my grandparents' in eastern Tennessee to the Grand Canyon to my aunt's near L.A. We stopped in Nashville (despite my hatred of country music, not bad), camped in a gorgeous site in New Mexico (Bluewater Lake State Park), got lost visiting Chaco Canyon (a desert city abandoned almost a thousand years ago), drove on Americana-laden Route 66, toured Flagstaff, swam near Santa Monica Pier in LA, briefly saw Vegas before crossing the endless starry brightness of Utah and wild rivers and mountains and wildflowers of Colorado... it was wonderful.

And drove home that it's really, really hard to afford more than one Giant Exploratory Trip in a year, so you really have to know what you want. Continental travel gets expensive.

So I have listed what I love within easy distance of Ann Arbor, and listed what I love best. I will add that my sister and her husband are entirely in love with NYC, my parents in love with San Francisco, myself in love with the history in the Jamestown/Yorktown/Williamsburg area of Virginia, that my family would not recommend Disney World at the top of any list but can endorse the Wizarding World of Harry Potter... and I hope you can find what you love best here!

P.S. - I find that between Ann Arbor and Detroit lies a small town called Canton. I wonder if perhaps it is in want of a hero?

-Kirala
