I'm also currently reading a lot of articles about the USA government shutdown.

What this author is saying about the state of pre-Revolutionary France is eerily similar to what journalists are currently saying about America.

Have to admit, I haven't read up on the French Revolution in a long long time, but I've had similar thoughts re: the comparisons. The tiniest of silver linings is that there seems to be a temporary solution being talked about to avoid the government defaulting on it's loans (because, you know not causing a worldwide economic disaster is kind of the bigger deal at the moment), but no end in sight to the shutdown seems in sight.

Yeah. It's been heading that way for some time. Expanding the difference between rich or poor, shrinking the middle class, and the rich people acting entitled and pissing all over everyone else as if it's their God-given right (and many of them will even say it is), is a perfect recipe for violent revolution. I hope it won't be violent this time, but honestly, that will make it an outlier historically.
