I am rather angry.

My psychologist says she's "sceptical" about learning disabilities. So far it hadn't been a problem; today it became one.

I was mentioning organisational issues (am several days overdue with some bills, still) and she started trying to tell me it was because I'm not prioritising, have a mental block about paperwork, and need a new perspective. All with this superior smile, as if she could see how in denial I was being.

I was upset. Now I'm angry.

I will give her one more session, and if she can't get it by then, I'm out. I will NOT be told I could do these things I have tried (and failed) so many years to do. I won't let her pile guilt onto me for not being better at these things I've become so good at dealing with. I will not be told I'm just lazy.

Not again.

Who is this person who calls herself 'psychologist' and why on earth are you bothering to see her?

Of course you have trouble with those things.

THAT IS KINDA THE POINT.

You might as well say to House,
"See, the PROBLEM is that you're not using one of your legs properly. All you need to do is just walk evenly and then you won't have a limp anymore!"

Pat yourself on the back, because you are at the place where you can see that type of stupid behaviour for what it is and call it. You do NOT need to have emotional stress piled on top to make the problem worse.

grumblegrumblestupidsilly'psychologist'personHAHgrumblegrumblegrumble.

The good ones I've been to, I think, would respond by saying, "Is it stressing you out? How are you dealing with that?" and "Have you got a plan for handling it? Shall we make one?" and "Have you any ideas for how you'd like to prevent this happening again?" - that sort of thing.
As in, be aware of your own life and your own feelings, take charge over your stress, be proactive in addressing the issues. Everything to reduce anxiety and confusion and to increase confidence and clarity.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Let me know if you want some *practical* help or even just empathy.

Let me at her with my normal curve! There is no doubt that organisation is a skill, just like ice-skating, singing and maths. Some people cannot do maths to save themselves, some are exceptionally good at it. Most people are "average" at organisation (by definition): some of us cannot organise ourselves out of a paper bag.
Remember that there are some psychologists who 'get it'. I can testify to the fact that you have got better over the years, with lots of practice! Build on your successes and don't let her get you down.

You are not lazy. Oh my gosh, what a terrible thing for her to say.

Why are you giving this woman even one more second of your time? Find someone who understands that not everyone's brain is wired the same and can help you. This woman can't.

My psychologist says she's "sceptical" about learning disabilities.

About their existence? How does that even work? Isn't it a bit like a neurologist who's 'skeptical' about cerebral palsy? Or a dermatologist who's 'skeptical' about psoriasis?

Is it okay if I ask what your learning disability is, and what you've tried to manage it? I'm curious because I have huge organisational difficulties myself, and I'm always interested in new techniques for handling that.

That's what I was thinking, too...

Fourthed. I... How... WHAT?!? How is that person even a psychologist?

...I said, and then I remembered that time my mother went to a doctor after having chronic pain for over a year. The doctor told her it was psychosomatic. Mum said "And...?" Doctor: "What do you mean, 'and'? It's psychosomatic. Just stop being in pain, duh." So yeah, idiots abound. *hugs*

Fifthing this.

WTF? Can we revoke her psychology degree now? You grab the degree, I'll get the paper shredder.

Seriously, don't bother with her.

She sounds frighteningly like a local psychologist on whom I wasted 11 months of my life... I left there with serious depression and my new counsellor had to spend about a year cleaning up the damage done by the first woman. (Mentioning no names, but if you're seeing someone in the next suburb over, with a hyphenated surname who sees clients in her home - that's her.) Seriously, it is just not worth seeing someone who is this unhelpful. Because it ends up being not just unhelpful, but harmful. You deserve better than that.

I am boiling with rage on your behalf right now. She's about as qualified to be a psychologist as I am to be a nuclear physicist. I am boggling at the fact that she doubts the existence of learning disabilities! Does she also think that the Earth is flat and that the moon landings were filmed at a Hollywood studio?

I agree with the commenter who said that a bad psychologist can do actual harm. If I were you, I would walk away.

You don't know me but I'm outraged enough on your behalf to say walk away now. In fact, don't walk, run. Don't give her another chance; she's already blown it.

Run! Don't walk! Run!

I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this kind of invalidation, full stop, and it's almost unbelievable that it's coming from a mental health professional. That sucks SO MUCH. A positive attitude doesn't magically make learning disabilities go away.
