We have a week-long erasable calendar on our wall, to fill in the kids' activities. In a normal week, it'll include things like "school", "piano", "church", "gym". You get the idea.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a moment of utter despair, erased the lot, and wrote "ENDLESS LOCKDOWN" across the calendar.
It still says that.
And now, because of the stupidity of some of my fellow Melburnians, we've got another two weeks of lockdown, with added benefits like "curfew!" and "playgrounds closed!".
I just… can't right now.

Date: 2021-08-16 06:26 am (UTC)And curfew is such bullshit. I am 100% on board with masks and vaccination and lockdown as an appropriate response to the current situation. I even squashed down my privacy concerns and installed the check-in app, because tracing is that important. All of those are legitimate public health requirements based on the best advice we have.
But last I heard the state government still hadn't answered the questions about what public health advice they had that said curfew was necessary or helpful. It allows for more cleaning time, yes, but we now know that fomites are not how covid-19 spreads. It makes tracing easier, yes, but only by making the same number of people run errands in a shorter amount of time, which was I thought what we were trying to avoid.
It makes things easier for the police, but making things easier for the police is not actually a public health goal, or the goal of a democratic government. And it makes that government look tough and like it's Doing Something and Taking This Seriously, but again, that isn't a public health thing, that's just theatre.

Date: 2021-08-16 09:31 pm (UTC)The one advantage of a curfew is that it keeps the hoons in my neighbourhood off the streets -- but since hooning was already illegal, I don't think it's actually necessary or useful.
