Decided to do [personal profile] shadowkat's TV meme. And I'm dreadful at finishing these, so I'm going to try doing it all in one go.

1: What Television Series did you last finish? When was that?
Elementary. And I enjoyed it all the way through, which is rare.

2: What are you currently watching?
Stargate Atlantis, Dark Matter, Burn Notice, Bones, and The Nevers.

3: What television series are you planning to watch next?
Gentleman Jack, as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.

4: What was the last television show you added to your to watch list?
Gentleman Jack, after Bernadette Banner mentioned it on her YouTube show.

5: Which television show did you last re-watch?
I tend to overlap rewatches and new watches, with about five shows on the go at a time. The most recent rewatch I finished was Stargate SG-1.
Currently rewatching Leverage. And The Good Place. And The Newsroom. And Jane the Virgin.

6: Which television series was the last one you really, really loved?
Not entirely sure. My tv loves are few and far between. It'd probably still be Buffy or Farscape.

7: What was/were the last television shows you bought on DVD?
The Good Place. It was worth it.

8: Streaming, Cable or Broadcast? Why?
The "cable" part of this question doesn't really apply to Australia. And I haven't watched broadcast tv since Channel 10 thoroughly screwed up Veronica Mars season 1. For me, it's mostly a choice between DVD and streaming. And I pick... both. I still buy plenty of DVDs, but I also have Disney+.

9: Children's, YA, NA or Adult?
Adult. But fairly non-gorey.

10: Sci-Fi or fantasy?
Sci-fi. I like fantasy novels, but really don't enjoy classic fantasy on tv. Whereas space fiction on tv is totally my thing.

11: Classic Television or modern?
I like the era where everything's episodic, but the most modern part of that. So, 90s and early 2000s.

12: Political talk shows or comedic ones?
Political. (But talk shows mostly aren't something I watch.)

13: Name a television series with a really bad book/comic/movie adaptation.
Buffy! The comic book was dreadful.

14: Name a television series where the movie/book adaptation actually was better than the television series.
Hmm… Tricky. I really can't think of one.

15: What television series changed your life?
Buffy! I wouldn't have half the interests I have now if it weren't for this show.

16: If you could bring three television shows to a deserted island which would you bring and why?
Am I trying to get off the island, or just deal with boredom?
Assuming boredom: Stargate, Frasier, and Murdoch Mysteries. Because they're all fun, all different genres, and a total of 34 seasons long (39, if I'm allowed to include Stargate Atlantis).

17: If you owned a television network what would you call it?
Phoenix TV. For no reason other than whimsy.

18: Which character from a television series is the most like you?
Anya, from Buffy. (With second place going to Dawn and Fred.)

19: Which character from a television series is the least like you?
Protagonists only… Nate Ford. I am not good at manipulating people, I am not good at planning cons, and I do not have a tragic backstory. Other than the fact that we both care about children, we have nothing whatsoever in common.

20: Best summer television show?
21: Best winter television show?
These aren't really relevant to Australia. We get US tv shows in a very random order, with no idea when they're intended to come out.

22: Pro or anti web-series? Why?
I've liked a couple. But they're not really my thing. I prefer a more traditional structure.

23: Streaming or DVD rental?
24: Do you prefer to buy television shows online streaming or on DVD?
Streaming is convenient, but DVD rental meant I could watch the DVD special features. That was way better. I still buy DVDs where I can.

30: Who’s your favorite television series writer?
Aaron Sorkin. I like my tv long-winded and pretentious.

31: What’s your favorite comedic television show?
Frasier. It was the first time I realised American tv could be witty.

32: What’s your favorite fantasy television series?
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

33: What’s your favorite SF television series?
Farscape. Duh.

34: List five OTPs.
Tru/Jack, Crichton/Aeryn, Veronica/Logan, Josh/Donna, Will/MacKenzie

35: Name a television show you consider to be terribly underrated.
The Dresden Files (tv show not books). I really loved it.

36: Name a television show you consider to be terribly overrated.
Out of the ones I own, I'd pick Avatar: the Last Airbender. It's good, but it's not exactly perfect.

37: How many television series on DVD or VHS are actually in your bookshelf/shelves right now?
Oh dear. Best if I just list them.
*deep breath*
Angel, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Batman: the animated series (borrowed), Battlestar Galactica, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Blackadder, Black Books, The Brittas Empire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Castle, Cheers, Community, Dawson's Creek, Dead Like Me, Defiance, Doctor Thorne, Doctor Who, Dollhouse, Downton Abbey, The Dresden Files, Elementary, Farscape, Firefly, Frasier, Friends, The Good Place, Goodnight Sweetheart, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, House, How I Met Your Mother, Jane the Virgin, Jeeves and Wooster, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Justice League: the Brave and the Bold, Leverage, Life on Mars, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Lois & Clark, Lost Girl, Mad Men, Medici, Midsomer Murders, The Muppet Show, Murdoch Mysteries, My Family, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, My Name is Earl, NCIS, Newsradio, The Newsroom, Once Upon a Time, Pretty Little Liars, Pushing Daisies, Red Dwarf, Robot Chicken, The Sarah Jane Adventures (borrowed), Spider-Man: the Animated Series, Star Trek Voyager, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Tru Calling, Veronica Mars, Warehouse 13, Wonderfalls, The X-Files, Xena: Warrior Princess, Yes Minister, and Yes Prime Minister.

38: What language do you (most often) watch in?
English (exclusively).

39: Name one of your favorite childhood television shows.
Spellbinder! An Australian fantasy show for kids. It was very fun.

40: Name one of your favorite television shows from your teenage years.
Dawson's Creek. It got me interested in what writers and directors are doing, as much as watching the actual story.

41: Do you have a library card to borrow television shows from the library? How often do you use it?
Yes, but I don't use it often.

42: Which was the best television show that you had to watch in school or that was considered educational?
None whatsoever.

43: Are you the kind of person who watches several television series at once or the kind of person who can only watch one and complete it at a time?
See: my answers to questions 2 and 5! I watch so many shows at once.

44: Do you like to listen to television shows in the background when you do other things? Do you do other things while watching tv?
Definitely. I watch tv while cooking, while editing, while crafting, while playing Stardew Valley… There are only a few shows that I give my undivided attention to. (Farscape is one, because so much happens in the looks between the main characters, rather than the dialogue.)

45: What is your favorite thing to eat when you watch television?
46: What is your favorite thing to drink when you watch television?
Brownies and tea.

47: What do you do to get out of a television slump - nothing to watch?
I watch Frasier and the West Wing on repeat until I feel like something else.

48: Where do you watch television?
Usually on my couch. But, as mentioned, I also watch while cooking or working (kitchen and study, respectively).

49: When is your favorite time to watch television?
During the day, when I have the house all to myself.

50: Why do you love to watch television?
Stories are so fascinating! And tv has the kind of stories that I find exciting and touching, simultaneously.

Behind the News was one I really liked in primary school, and I wish they did an adult version for people like me who are terrible at keeping up.

This was fun! (I am very interested in your thoughts on The Nevers if you ever feel like sharing.)

I also love fantasy novels but feel like most fantasy TV is not very good. Maybe because it's a relatively new genre and they haven't figured out how to do it yet? Scifi TV is always much more satisfying, you're right.

Aaron Sorkin. I like my tv long-winded and pretentious.

Lol relatable.

You own a lot of DVDs!

Excellent!

(I always forget that there's a Commonwealth spelling of ton/tonne--it's not one of the ones that's easy to remember like extra u's and things like that. So I'm always charmed when I'm hit with it out of the blue.)

Did you notice that somehow or other this meme skips over 25-29? I figured it out recently and thought, okay did the meme I stole it from have issues with counting, or was it me? Hard to know - I can't count, so most likely me.

Hmmm...I may go back and finish the meme. I'm just drawing a blank on half of the answers.

Oh, we have a lot of television shows in common. And yes, agree the Buffy comics were truly awful, as was the recent reboot - which is weirdly worse than the other ones. I don't think they know how to do it as a comic.

I'd agree. I read Whedon's X-men run though - which come to think of it, wasn't paced very well either. There was a noticeable difference in pacing when Christopher Gage took over. So they improved when Whedon et al left. Jordan Bellaire and her crew - don't seem to know how to do it either - not much happens in their issues and I feel like I'm reading act one of a television episode.

That said - I'm reading Jonathan Hickman's X-men now - and the pacing is kind of out of the window? It's written like a speculative sci-fi novel or game - heavy on the world-building. Possibly the most heavy on world-building that I've ever seen. They have reproductions of emails, chat rooms, and corporate communications between mutant leaders in there.
