things just keep on getting interesting
Aug. 29th, 2020 01:19 pmSo, my house now has unclean water. (Along with half the other houses in Melbourne.)
For the record, that puts our current status at:
- in a curfew
- unable to travel more than 5 km away from home
- compulsory wearing of masks
- can't leave home for more than an hour a day
- only supermarkets and pharmacies open, everything else shut
- doing school at home, via conferencing apps
- boiling all tapwater before drinking
...does this officially qualify as living in interesting times?
I am coping with life mainly by rewatching Stargate. This is my first rewatch since the first epic watching that spawned my Stargate Is Annoying Me tag, back in LJ days. While I still agree with all my previous gripes, I'm enjoying myself a lot more.
For one thing, I'm aware of what's coming, so the Vegemite Effect is no longer a factor.
Also, I've discovered that the show was given an initial two-season guarantee, and they decided to slow-play the arcs and spend time getting to know the characters. This pleases me, and I can see how it affected the show, so I'm okay with them doing it that way.
But mainly... I know what's coming! I know we're going to get zat guns! And Thor! And Baal! And spaceships! And exploding suns! And Rodney! And replicators! And fun and silly sci-fi!
I kinda love this show.

Date: 2020-08-29 10:11 am (UTC)One tip from when we had unclean water post-earthquake, particularly if you're not a morning person: you might want to have some pre-boiled water on hand for brushing your teeth, and even put something over your bathroom tap to stop the automatic habit of rinsing the brush under tap water while you're still half-asleep....
I hope they can fix it soon.

Date: 2020-08-30 10:05 pm (UTC)I have to say, it's rather nice looking at my house and thinking through possible lack of utilities. If we completely lost tap water, we'd still have a massive water tank. And if we completely lost power, we'd still be able to cook over our fire. :)

Date: 2020-08-30 10:07 pm (UTC)I think in those circumstances I'd probably be a bit paranoid, and wondering whether to boil water anyway...

Date: 2020-08-31 06:07 am (UTC)I am still very amused by them managing to leave suburbs off the list, while simultaneously going "honestly guys... that is actually not good because people will read the list and think they're fine." It is at least low risk, but even so...
And yay for returned water and power! I have never been so glad to not still be on the medical power list because that would have been so stressful - a friend had to move in with her parents because the feeding pump batteries only last so long, and when your child is peg fed you kind of need that to work.
