Disney opinions
Sep. 4th, 2019 09:45 amI've been reading a lot of discussions about Frozen and Tangled, and which one is better (Tangled. Tangled is better.), and I found one thing interesting.
Everyone keeps saying "Tangled has a far better plot, and much better animation. The only reason people keep preferring Frozen is because Frozen's music is so much better."
Am I seriously the only one who thinks Tangled's music is far better than Frozen's?
Because, really – Tangled has "Mother Knows Best" and "I Have A Dream" - not to mention the gorgeous instrumental numbers. Whereas Frozen's music was okay individually, but the songs are very mismatched and don't fit well together at all.
Plus, the having-a-conversation-while-kinda-singing thing they do (for instance, when Anna and Elsa are talking in the ice palace) really doesn't work. It's not leading into a song, and it's not in a similar style to the songs, or anything. It's just... there.
Seriously, is it just me? I could have sworn the Tangled music was way better.
"Let It Go" is admittedly quite good. My problem with that one is purely personal: I dislike the way Idina Menzel's voice sounds on high notes, so whenever the song starts getting exciting I start wincing. ...but that's just me.

Date: 2019-09-04 02:21 am (UTC)I have much stronger feelings about Frozen in general, positive and negative, than I do about Tangled.
But also Gothel is one of the very worst villains for me.
Whereas I feel like the villain in Frozen is the concept "conceal, don't feel."

Date: 2019-09-06 02:28 am (UTC)I am currently getting subjected to weekly bouts of Frozen because my kids are obsessed with it. Hoping they move on to something else soon...

Date: 2019-09-05 12:45 am (UTC)I think the preference a lot of people have for Frozen over Tangled is...that Frozen is a sister-romance, while Tangled is a straight romance between a would-be princess and a poor thief, which Disney has done one too many times. But I need more than that. Yes, Frozen may be more politically correct, but Tangled is more entertaining, has better music, and far better animation -- because this was before Disney started digitizing everything. (I despise the animation in Frozen. It's ugly. And the songs, with the possible exception of Let it Go, do not work for me.)
So no, you are not alone in your preference. Politically correct content isn't enough for me -- it has to be well-executed.

Date: 2019-09-06 02:30 am (UTC)Absolutely. I was telling my mother I didn't understand the hype - and she pointed out that it stars two girls, and involves sparkly snow powers, so little girls can "play Frozen" together and feel really awesome. (And she's right. My daughter and my niece love dressing up and playing Frozen.)

Definitely.

Date: 2019-09-05 06:56 am (UTC)I only know that the Tangled plot is thoroughly unmemorable for me (I remember more from the "Once Upon a Time" revisiting of the story, which is Quite Different), which is probably because I am Bored.Now. of het romance and tend to just erase it from my memory which is why it took me a moment to remember there were guys in Frozen too. It wasn't *about* them, so when I forget their existence I can still remember an enjoyable plot.
Also, in addition to "Let It Go" which is gloriously wallowy angst, I adore "In Summer" because narrative irony. I definitely see your point about them not fitting together! But I adore them both.
The Tangled songs may have been perfectly competent but they didn't happen to hit my idkink buttons so I don't really remember them either.

Date: 2019-09-09 09:13 am (UTC)Also, I never really cared for Let It Go until I heard Demi Lovato's version. Further ruined the original for me. Honestly, it's the only song from the movie I even remember, and I really don't like it as is. Demi's version though, that's fantastic. You can really feel the hurt from that one.

Indeed. I don't get it.
