Rachel Held Evans has died, and I am sad.


For those of you who don't know, RHE was a Christian writer who was very influential in Evangelical and Progressive circles in recent years. I was a fan.

My sadness at her death kind of exists on two different levels:
1) She was a good writer and a lovely person, and it sucks that she died.
2) She was 37 (I'm 36), with a 3 year old son (mine is 4), and a 1 year old daughter (mine is 2).

MY GOODNESS am I not ready for people like me to be the ones dying. And I keep looking at my teeny kidlets and thinking about her teeny kidlets, and...

It's just so tragic that people die. Can we work on fixing that?

What the fuck???? I haven't followed her in the last while, but her blog meant a lot to mean 8-10 years ago, and I would occasionally come across her more recent tweets and politics, which gave me little rays of hope about the state of the evangelical church. And now she's gone at 37??? I don't know how to process this.

I was really shocked to read about it. I knew she was in an induced coma, and I know that's always very serious, but I was still so shocked when I heard she had died. My first thought was about how young she was, and my second was for her kids. They won't even remember her.

I was so sad when I heard she had died, for many of the same reasons as you. I knew she was in ICU, and I hoped that she would recover.

37 is too young. Her poor family.
