Just got my first fic comment that... I really don't know what to do with.

I've had some interesting ones before, but this one is just ODD.


For context:
- I have just written a story about Buffy, and her internal musings on the sleep habits of each guy she's slept with.
- Said guys are entirely canonical. In that she slept with them on the show.
- The commenter in question is someone who seems to write a lot of BtVS non-con.

Their comment?

This is... well, she's not modest, that's for sure! I mean, she's got roughly five lovers- or supposedly 'husbands', since she's performed the marital act with them.
Well-written story, though.

They've also bookmarked my story, with tags of "despicable conduct" and "horrible behaviour on a young woman's part".


It's not like I've turned sweet, innocent Buffy into a puppy murderer. Her "behaviour" is canon. And this person writes NON-CON. Which is fine, don't get me wrong, but you don't get to write NON-CON and complain that MY fic is the one depicting "despicable conduct".

I kind of want to reply with "Dude... what are you ON?"

Also apparently I have acted despicably, by this person's standards. As have so many others. And the husband thing... what? Pretty sure having sex with someone doesn't mean you're married to them.

I do find myself wondering why they have bookmarked it... and wondering if any of us can be bothered going and bookmarking their stuff with the same tag, as non-con is certainly about despicable conduct!

It sounds like they think agreeing to extra-marital sex is immoral, but they want to read or write about it anyway, and non-con/rape is their loophole because there's no immorality on the part of the victim.

Maybe this sort of thing is going around! I got a comment tonight on a threeway fic in a different fandom (romantic, explicit, between ABC where A/B is canon and A/C nearly is) that simply said "This is horrible" followed by another comment a minute later saying, "This is horrible. The worst part is, it's so well-written!"

That's not how it works. (Well, you have to consummate a marriage to make it valid, but it doesn't work the other way around.)

Ah. Yes. Thought so. That guy. He's... special, to say the least. He's posted a bunch of very weird (and blisteringly homophobic) fic, not to mention treated some people in fandom somewhat less than kindly. ETA: I guess my point is, I wouldn't recommend engaging with this guy, no good will come of it. So sorry you had to deal with him.

On the plus side, I'd missed that fic, off to read it properly!

Ah. I wondered if it was him. Very unpleasant guy, essentially a Religious Reich troll. Operates under several names too, I believe. I think someone (rahirah?) posted about him a month or so back. You alerted me to him when I (briefly) put him on the Herald.

Honestly, I'd be relieved if he turned out to be "only" a troll... Some of what he's posted is just scary, but he seems to truly believe it.

On the plus side, yay (current) Buffy fandom for having so few true nutcases that they're easily identified. :)

Yes, he's in a tiny minority, but is that because the real loonies have moved on elsewhere? Our fandom is now too small for most berserkers? (Not entirely sure I'm sad about that).

He does seem to express those bonkers ideas pretty consistently, but that may be because most BtVS fans are at least socially liberal. In other contexts perhaps he's pro-gay?

Oh, it's a guy. That both makes this a lot more understandable and actually frightening. I hope he spends all of his time online bugging people and doesn't do anything at all in the real world.

As several people have commented, it's a frightening attitude. Buffy is despicable because she's had pre-marital sex with more than one person. Why do I think this attitude does not extend to males?

I find that people like this are self righteous creeps.

I know the guy. I've banned him personally and from the NHA fic community because he's barking mad and wildly abusive. Back away and don't engage.
