Just once, I'd like to have a tv show where the protagonist's parents were horribly murdered by a killer who was never found...

...and then, the killer is NEVER EVER found. And it STAYS as a tragic piece of backstory rather than being spun out across several seasons as a giant conspiracy.

Seriously, why do shows keep doing this?

No idea which show is the subject of this, but it could be way too many shows... and movies... and books...

I think the trick is to watch shows that get canceled too early for that particular thread to get resolved.

Yeah, that would be nice, wouldn't it? I'm to the point where giant conspiracies usually just feel silly. Like oh, your characters are so super-special that the world revolves around them? Suuuuuuure. Even with characters I love!
