Oh yeah, it's VERY tricky. It involves circular needles, and you still have to knit it in sections, but then you join all the sections on to the one circular needle at the end, and you don't have to sew anything. Personally I think it's way more trouble than it's worth - it's not THAT hard to sew up a few seams!
In my opinion, the number 1 advantage crochet has over knitting is that it's WAY quicker. I love knitting, but it takes a lot of time to finish an adult sized garment.
adding to the above that I have done this and it's not THAT tricky. (Well, sort of done this. For some reason I knit the sleeves flat but joined them to my work in the round and only seamed them after the sweater was finished. Uh... I've made one sweater? It was my own pattern? It's kind of a weird sweater.)
