Pro-tip: If you don't want people to discuss your traumatic past when defending their favourite television character, don't write about your traumatic past in your episode review.

Also: If the characters in question are a super-strong woman who has recently been resurrected and a 200-year-old vampire with a thing for blonde women who want to kill him, then maybe, just maybe, their situation will not be directly analogous to "generic woman" and "generic man" in the same situation? Possibly?

Plus: Listening to what people say is a good thing! Especially before you ban them for saying something they never actually said!

And I'm out.

Discussions of Spike and Buffy never end well. I have held this as a maxim since season six first aired. I don't know what it was/is about the pairing, but they just don't go well.

Meredith Brooks, Gnarls Barkley, Patsy Kline, The Who, and Deep Purple... all would be banned.

And how can they ban words that were used in the actual show episodes? "Out for a walk - censored." "That's censored talk." "That's an amazingly censored thing to say." "I rather think not. I seem to be rather... rather... censored. Completely, in fact." "Can I be censored too?"

I remember a heated debate in the comments of his AtLA reviews about the acceptability of "fat" as a descriptor. While ugly but appropriately worded sexism and ableism (esp re Azula) went unremarked.

Correction: Spike has a thing for just ONE blonde woman who wants to kill him. (Or does she? Doesn't really seem so. ;) )

I'm pretty sure he's never had a thing for Glory. :)

Sounds like it's gonna end up on unfunny_fandom very shortly. Where it will also become a storm of wank.

Mark has tunnel vision. In one of his Twilight reviews, he called Stephenie Meyer a bad person for saying Orson Scott Card was her favorite author, but in another, praised himself for liking H.P. Lovecraft.

I've never seen Buffy, but the way you describe the episode, it sounds awfully hot.

If that happened as early as "Smashed" (I really don't think I ever saw anybody claiming the "Smashed" sex scenes as sexual assault), I hate to think what'll happen when he gets further into S6.

He's been spoiled on the AR for years. So either he knows a lot more about the show than he lets on and knows exactly where it's headed, or that's the one and only thing he's ever known about it and he's spent the last year going "I wonder if this is the episode where Spike rapes Buffy." So when he sees a (not exactly vanilla) sex scene between them, that must be it, and cue every boilerplate analysis he has been saving for that day.

He reads TV Tropes so he is bound to know more about all shows than he claims. The page about him at TV Tropes even points this out.

I just remembered there was one bit in early s5, before he supposedly found out about Dawn, when someone commented that at one of those Mark Travels The Country And Gets Bought Drinks thingies Mark had mentioned some other in-story retconning, and when someone else replied "Kind of like Dawn, then?" Mark had grinned and nodded. Of course, Mark quickly explained it as just being confused and not wanting to let on that he had no idea what the other guy was talking about.

God help his delicate sensibilities when he gets to Dead Things and...the handcuffs.

God knows how he's going to twist Buffy's dream into it being about her being abused.

Ahh, I see. Thanks.

Yes, that's pretty bad. "Reach for a way something sort-of parallels something in Mark's life" is something he's done at least since Harry Potter, but when he started talking about a breakup (...actually the same breakup he talked about there, I think) and how it compared to Dumbledore's disappointing Harry, it was just kind of weird and non-sequiturish. No blowups; I don't think anyone even commented on it (for my part, I was too busy going o_O).

I saw the beginning of that, I think, and decided to stop reading about 20 posts in.

And strangely enough, even after Spike does nearly rape Buffy, I actually kinda forgive him. I mean, yeah, what he did was horrible, but then he actually recognises that the problem is with himself and not with Buffy, and goes and takes steps to change himself and ensure that he becomes someone who won't do that to her again. I mean, really, if every rapist or attempted rapist acted like Spike did, I suspect that rape would be a far less traumatic thing than it currently is, since the physical aspect is no longer compounded by having your partner or acquaintance going around calling you a slutty whore afterwards.

A rapist who reforms is a common part of rape fantasy that a lot of people overlook. I shudder to think what Mark's going to say there, because I have a feeling he's going to shame a lot of women for their sexual fantasies. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen people like Mark do that so many times, it's the response I expect now.

ETA: If every sexual abuser did what Spike did, there would also be exponentially less sexual abuse. Most sexual abuse is perpetrated by a smallish fraction of the male population. It's just that those people do it over and over and over and over...

Yeah, I mean, who HASN'T had that fantasy where you get transported to a fantasy world and the evil warlock captures you and makes you his love slave, but then he ends up falling in love with you, and it's really hot, but then he doesn't stop being evil, so you start having an affair with his treacherous lieutenant/the elf prince*, and then you have to run away and lead a revolt against him while totally being the co-leader of the resistance and having hot smex with the treacherous lieutenant/elf prince, except you still kinda miss the sex you got while being the warlock's love slave, because it was totally HAWT, and your whole fantasy is a whole lot less dark and tragic now than it was before, so then you have to fantasize about getting captured by the warlock's forces and having him "punish" you, because otherwise you have to reboot the ENTIRE fantasy, and that's just annoying, and it's not like you're a superhero franchise or anything.

And somehow that fantasy's wrong, just because real rape = bad? Also, that last paragraph was TOTALLY meant to be just one sentence.

As to the rest, yeah... I know that sexual abusers doing what Spike did would pretty much stop sexual abuse. TBH, knowing that most sexual abusers wouldn't even think of acting like Spike kinda makes the story seem unrealistic. On the other hand, I actually quite like the way the show shows that there are steps that abusers can take to stop being total douchebags: either removing yourself from the relationship (Buffy) or honestly assessing your actions and making a decision to stop being that kind of person (Spike). It's a lot better than just saying "You do this, therefore you're irredeemable".

*These two may, in fact, be the same person. Also, I kinda hope I'm not the only person who's ever had this fantasy.

Why of course I have never had a fantasy like that whatever could you be talking of you are so very strange. I have never had a fantasy wherein I am a princess captured in war and trained to be the opposing emperor's sex slave and he becomes so obsessed with me he stops sleeping with his wife and but still the sex is extremely rough and dubcon at best and I certainly would never write a fantasy like that down anywhere.

The things you posted were your fault, Mark. Emailing you with "This mod is being unfair" will do no good when "this mod" is you. Apparently he takes "participants in this community must treat me as infallible" as so bedrock it doesn't even need to be said.
