frell that
Jul. 20th, 2012 08:11 amPro-tip: If you don't want people to discuss your traumatic past when defending their favourite television character, don't write about your traumatic past in your episode review.
Also: If the characters in question are a super-strong woman who has recently been resurrected and a 200-year-old vampire with a thing for blonde women who want to kill him, then maybe, just maybe, their situation will not be directly analogous to "generic woman" and "generic man" in the same situation? Possibly?
Plus: Listening to what people say is a good thing! Especially before you ban them for saying something they never actually said!
*sighs*
And I'm out.

The language policing really is over the top. Can't say "bitch", can't say "crazy", can't say "dumb", can't say "blind"... Words are bad! They should be removed from the language forevermore, even if it means we can't talk about anything using terms that everyone understands.

Date: 2012-07-19 11:37 pm (UTC)And how can they ban words that were used in the actual show episodes? "Out for a walk - censored." "That's censored talk." "That's an amazingly censored thing to say." "I rather think not. I seem to be rather... rather... censored. Completely, in fact." "Can I be censored too?"

Can't find it, though. Oh well.

Date: 2012-07-20 03:36 am (UTC)It went down something like this:
Buffy and Spike punch each other in the faces, knock down a house, and have hawt hawt sexytimes.
Spuffy Fandom's reaction: "Yay! Hot smecks! :D"
Mark's reaction: "Spike beats her! She's being abused! It's rape!"
Spuffy Fandom: "Not... really."
Mark: "How dare you disagree! How can you think it's hot?! I have a tragic past that I never shut up about, and therefore understand abuse! Buffy is a tragic abuse victim! SPIKE IS BEATING HER UP!!!"
Spuffy Fandom: "But she's actually a lot stronger than him... And she kinda starts the whole punching thing..."
Mark: "Strength doesn't equal consent! Rape apologism! BANNINATION!!!!"
Spuffy Fandom: "What, you're saying she doesn't consent? She pulls down his zipper and hops on."
Mark: "He's abusing her! He beats her up!!! You don't hit girls!"
Spuffy Fandom: "But... she's not a typical girl. She's a Slayer. As in really, really, strong. And Buffy, the stronger party, initiates the punching of Spike, the weaker party. If anything, she's abusing him."
Mark: "MRA! How dare you infect my site?!!! Begone! BANNINATION!!!"
Spuffy Fandom: "Hang on. Some of us are abuse victims, and actually identify with Spike in this scenario. It's not like–"
Mark: "How dare you co-opt abuse victims?!!!! I'm an abuse victim! My tragic past is bigger and tragicker than all your tragic pasts combined!!!! If you don't agree with me you're promoting rape culture!!! Fuck you!!! BANNINATION!!!!"
...like that. Only with most of the mods agreeing with Mark and posting gifs telling people to shut up and leave - and them blatantly not listening to a word that was being said to them.
And it's even getting worse...

Date: 2012-07-20 03:47 am (UTC)Mark has tunnel vision. In one of his Twilight reviews, he called Stephenie Meyer a bad person for saying Orson Scott Card was her favorite author, but in another, praised himself for liking H.P. Lovecraft.
I've never seen Buffy, but the way you describe the episode, it sounds awfully hot.

Date: 2012-07-20 12:12 pm (UTC)Yes, that's pretty bad. "Reach for a way something sort-of parallels something in Mark's life" is something he's done at least since Harry Potter, but when he started talking about a breakup (...actually the same breakup he talked about there, I think) and how it compared to Dumbledore's disappointing Harry, it was just kind of weird and non-sequiturish. No blowups; I don't think anyone even commented on it (for my part, I was too busy going o_O).

Date: 2012-07-21 03:19 pm (UTC)And strangely enough, even after Spike does nearly rape Buffy, I actually kinda forgive him. I mean, yeah, what he did was horrible, but then he actually recognises that the problem is with himself and not with Buffy, and goes and takes steps to change himself and ensure that he becomes someone who won't do that to her again. I mean, really, if every rapist or attempted rapist acted like Spike did, I suspect that rape would be a far less traumatic thing than it currently is, since the physical aspect is no longer compounded by having your partner or acquaintance going around calling you a slutty whore afterwards.

Date: 2012-07-21 08:14 pm (UTC)ETA: If every sexual abuser did what Spike did, there would also be exponentially less sexual abuse. Most sexual abuse is perpetrated by a smallish fraction of the male population. It's just that those people do it over and over and over and over...

Date: 2012-07-23 08:06 am (UTC)And somehow that fantasy's wrong, just because real rape = bad? Also, that last paragraph was TOTALLY meant to be just one sentence.
As to the rest, yeah... I know that sexual abusers doing what Spike did would pretty much stop sexual abuse. TBH, knowing that most sexual abusers wouldn't even think of acting like Spike kinda makes the story seem unrealistic. On the other hand, I actually quite like the way the show shows that there are steps that abusers can take to stop being total douchebags: either removing yourself from the relationship (Buffy) or honestly assessing your actions and making a decision to stop being that kind of person (Spike). It's a lot better than just saying "You do this, therefore you're irredeemable".
*These two may, in fact, be the same person. Also, I kinda hope I'm not the only person who's ever had this fantasy.
