"I just did ten minutes of bike riding, and felt like I wanted to die. Hurrah for fitness! *is exhausted*"

"You know, you should really push through the wanting to die bit if you want to get fit."

"Yes, I did. Which is why I kept on going for a whole extra bit."

"Well, I mean - instead of just ten minutes, you should be trying to do twenty minutes."

"How about, instead of doing five minutes, like I did yesterday, I could push through the pain and get it up to ten minutes? LIKE I JUST DID."

"Yes, but you need to be riding for longer."

*narrows eyes*

I realise they were trying to be helpful and advisey. But honestly - just because my Steps To Fitness are teeny and pathetic, doesn't mean they're not HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENTS as far as my body is concerned.

(I can now go up teeny little hills without falling off my bike! Yay me!)

YAY YOU, say I. Huge accomplishments are relative, and that's okay. Congratulations! Go you!

Gah. Not helpful and not even accurate. You are working at YOUR fitness level, not a theoretical level where 20 minutes is the magic number. Ignore the 'helpful' advice - you're doing amazingly well. Keep going! :D

Things like this are why I can't stand personal trainers. I know where my limits are and when I'vegone just past them, but they always think they know better.

Not EVERYONE is a total ignoramus when it comes to their body.

You're doing really well and anyone who's sensible understands what you're saying here! :-)

ugh, underminey "helpful" "advice" is so gross. YAY FOR YOU for finding something you like AND seeing through that bullshit.

This time last year I was doing teeny baby steps to fitness via a newspaper insert called something like 30 Days to Get Slightly Less Breathless Without Paying For A Gym. And it felt good, so I kept on going, and I'm right up on organised regular aerobic exercise now, and enjoying it. But it takes time, and you have to feel good about it. Small steps are Good Steps.

*agrees with everyone else*
Ignore the silly person who doesn't know YOUR fitness level.
You're doing great! I can't even ride a bike any more without falling off around corners! (at least, last time I tried, years ago, I found I just couldn't steer around corners. So, so sad.)
*cheers with pompoms for Mez*

I'd also like to mention that, when I first started at a gym, I could only lift 0.5kg weights and that HURT. But in less than a year I was up to 7kg, so teeny steps is the way to do it :-)

Was unhelpful person looking to be smacked upside the head with a wet fish? If not, they should reconsider their "encouragement" tactics.

But go you! :D

You DOUBLED your time from one day to the next. That is freaking fantastic. Go at your own pace, you are doing splendidly.

I gather you are riding outside, not on a staionary bike?
