It should not be THIS HARD to find something to do.


I am sitting in an office surrounded by engineers who can't write (as very clearly evidenced by the documents they're producing), who are all producing more and more paperwork by the day.

I have been walking around to anyone and everyone, offering to do editing, wordsmithing, or anything else language-related. I have pointed out that I have NOTHING to do, and am perfectly happy to look at just about anything.

...and no-one will give me anything to do.


So far, it looks like my afternoon will consist of studying Latin, and drinking tea. Fun, but not really that productive...

Learning Latin is very productive - perhaps you can make it a fad and people could start speaking it again.

When I've got nothing to do I resort to Professional Development, ie reading blogs in my area. Then I take the things that make me most excited and send out a "Links of interest" post to my colleagues. Apparently some of them not only actually read but even enjoy it.

Anyway, but also when I run out of Professional Development I read lolcats and Not Always Right and Clients From Hell.

In my experience, the more people need editing, the less they think they need it. Doesn't matter if they don't use punctuation at all, if they don't know what a capital letter is, if their sentences don't even have a verb in them... they see nothing wrong with it. And if you do manage to get to edit it and show it to them afterwards, they don't see any difference. And if you point it out to them, they just shrug and go "The important thing is that people understand what it says."

Ask their bosses to make them give it to you instead.
