Here's one almost-a-drabble and five drabbles, about minor characters from Angel.
Vigil
Souls on All Souls Day are staying asleep
No matter how solemn a vigil you keep
Sit and keep waiting, if that’s what you will
But the dead in their graves will stay silent and still
Souls on All Souls Day are not coming back
You’re not worth returning – too much that you lack
Fifty long years, and you still haven’t learned?
The fire’s gone out but you’re still getting burned
Souls on All Souls Day are staying away
Doesn’t matter how often you wish and you pray
But maybe this time, when you stay here all night,
Though they’re not coming back
…there’s a chance that they might.
Giving Birth
It had all gone wrong.
Slayers had come and exploded it all, and now the family was scattered.
Men in uniforms were messing about with computer pieces and chaining up the darkness.
Daddy was still weeping, mourning, and would not be Daddy anymore.
No more violence, terror, pain, or people screaming in the streets.
But she would fix it all.
One bite, one drink, one mouthful of blood in return, and then everything would unbreak itself, and the way it should be would be the way it was.
She would be a mummy again, and Darla would be so proud.
Secret Identity
Lily’s not very confident.
Anne is – Anne takes crap from no-one.
Chantarelle is romantic and mystical.
Anne knows damn well that rent is rent, waitressing is waitressing, and vampires are dangerous.
Sister Sunshine wants peace for all mankind.
Anne gives away their leftovers to some kids squatting in a warehouse.
Danielle never has any money left.
Anne has started saving.
Jane hates her family, and decides to run away.
Anne decides to make a family for everyone like her.
Every morning, this girl without a name puts on her costume, turns into Anne, and goes out to face the world.
The Talk
It was about that time again.
Living on the streets stripped away most of your naivety pretty quickly, but there could still be some significant gaps in your knowledge. You’d either get no information, which would leave you blindsided, or get jumbled up misinformation, which would be worse.
So, every few months the eleven and twelve year old girls would be herded into the room next to the kitchen, and one of the Center volunteers would talk them through it.
Anne filled the cardboard box with pads, tampons, and some very informative booklets, and once again headed into the fray.
Festivities
Dennis really liked holidays.
On Halloween he put fake spiders all over the apartment, and floated sheets around spookily.
He actually tried cooking for Thanksgiving – and sure, the turkey was pretty burnt, but the pie was surprisingly good.
On Christmas Day, he put a cd of holiday music (“Deck The Halls, Rudolph, White Christmas, and all your favorite tunes!”) on repeat for the entire day. He also made the tree dance from side to side, which was kinda cute.
Then came April Fools Day.
After the fourth bucket-of-water-positioned-cunningly-above-the-door, and the sixth whoopee cushion, Cordelia was wishing she’d never reminded him.
Utah Bride
He was so pretty. And so very little.
Justine dropped the knife on the back seat, uncaring, and returned to the bundle in her arms.
A fuzzy blanket (slightly bloodstained, but that didn’t matter) and underneath…
Five fingers on the right hand, five fingers on the left. All with the tiniest fingernails she’d ever seen.
Bending closer, Justine closed her eyes and breathed in the nice-baby smells. “We are going to have such a beautiful life, little one,” she whispered.
She kissed him, once, softly on his forehead. Then she started the car.
“Time for us to collect your daddy.”
