Most of this week will be dedicated to preparing for my housemate's kitchen tea.

(For foreigners with different vocabulary: when getting married, women have a hen's night, or a kitchen tea. Some have both. A hen's night is generally wild, raucous, and very silly; a kitchen tea is also wild, raucous, and silly, but involves less alcohol, more cupcakes, and a different time of day.)

I have to:
- make caramel slice
- make brownies
- make butterfly cakes
- buy dip and things to eat it with
- plan three party games
- gather supplies for the party games
- run the party games
- clean Mum's house, pre-party
- clean Mum's house, post-party
- find something nice to wear
- be charming to a dozen party guests, most of whom I've never met before

And in the meantime, the rest of my life will continue to be busy as ever...

Sounds like a good time. For the guests.
We call it a shower - usually in the afternoon. Why? I don't know.

There is also a party you can have at night - usually involving visiting a club.

We have baby showers, bridal showers, couple showers [bridal showers with guys invited] and I don't doubt house and boat showers!

LOL! My thoughts exactly.

I wish you luck, Deird. I was in charge of something similar two years ago and it was quite a bit of work. I did have fun, tho!

Over here we have bridal showers (during the day) and bachelorette parties (which are at night and generally involve nightclubs/male strippers and copious amounts of liquor...also x-rated gifts).

I do my best to be educational.

Here it's Bachelor Parties/Bachelorette Parties.

Your names are a bit more colourful.

And fewer penises penes phalloi strippers.

Interesting. I've lived in Melbourne all my life, and have never heard 'kitchen tea'. I've always heard it as 'hen's night'.

Good luck!

We have hen parties - usually involving far too many cackling drunken women staggering around making total idiots of themselves these days! I think a kitchen tea sounds so much better!

I think, though, that you really need a domestic goddess icon. But I can't pass you it from here, you'd have to go to my LJ to snag it if you wanted.
