Just rewatched The Day of Black Sun, from AtLA.

My goodness that episode is brilliant.

It's been set up as the series finale. It really has - everything has been building up to it, right from the middle of season 1. (Two years. Two years of building up to this one episode.)

And clearly:
- the Gaang will revert to their original costumes
- all the other friendly people we saw will return and fight in the epic battle
- Zuko will face his father
- the Fire Nation will be caught off-guard by the eclipse
- Aang will win the day! Hooray!

...well, the first three happen.

But really - SO MUCH set up as the series finale. (I'm not entirely sure what I expected them to do for the next ten episodes.)

And then, everything goes wrong.

Suddenly, they have no secret plan, no invasion force, no surprise attack, no idea what to do next...

And Sozin's Comet is STILL ON ITS WAY.

Instead of battling the Fire Lord on his weakest day, Aang has to fight him at his strongest.

Instead of having an army at his heels, Aang has to fight him alone.

It's wonderfully thought out. And brilliantly written.

I love this episode so much.

My brother feels kinship with Sokka as a fellow engineer type. I just love how he gets to be the comic relief AND the badass normal.
