My problem with loving enemies is the temptation to conflate loving them with wanting for them what one wants, not what is in their best interests. "I only want what's best for you." "God loves you just the way you are, but he loves you too much to let you stay that way."

Maybe loving someone is wanting them to be their own best self, and hating them is wanting them to be someone else entirely.
