Not a genre I usually write, not a situation I ever intended to write, but I certainly enjoyed writing it.

Summary: sex pollen and the aftermath

On the advisability of sex with a teammate

First

Carter and Teal’c were still out on their recon mission. Jackson was taking notes. And Cam was sorting through the goods they’d exchanged. The rest was pure clumsiness.

“Damn!”

“What happened?”

There was glass and yellow dust everywhere.

“I broke one of the bottles. The ones full of powder. Sorry.”

“That’s a shame.” Jackson stood up, and came over to see. Cam turned, and – wow. Jackson was toned. And his shirt looked way better than Cam remembered.

A few minutes later, and Jackson blinked and said “Wait a minute. This isn’t exactly…” – he slid his hand along Cam’s forearm – “Um. What colour powder was in that bottle?”

Jackson was kissing his neck in a very distracting way, but Cam tried to remember. “Uh, yellow, I think – yeah, do that again – mmm, yellow. Why?”

“Damn,” Jackson said, fumbling with Cam’s shirt. “I’m pretty sure the locals mentioned that being–” He trailed off, too busy to finish talking.

This sounded important, but frankly getting Jackson’s pants off was way more important right now. He tried, though: “Being what?”

Jackson surfaced. “Uh – potent. Low dosage only, or… something.”

“Oh. Right. We should – yes, right there – should do something.”

Then

Cam kicked a rock, which skittered away into the creek. He looked around for another, bigger one to kick.

Behind him, he heard Daniel leave the tent and walk slowly his way. Cam did not turn around. And he definitely was not focusing solely on Daniel’s footsteps.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, gazing fixedly at the creek.

Daniel, when he joined him, had his hands in his pockets too. It was weirdly reassuring, though Cam couldn’t define why.

They stood there in silence for a while.

Finally, Daniel spoke. “So… how are you holding up?”

“Fine.”

“Really?”

“Yep.”

“Honestly?”

Cam rolled his eyes. “No. I’m pissed.”

“I didn’t plan any…”

“Not with you. I’m pissed with me.” He kicked another rock. “I should have known better.”

“Right.” Daniel nodded. “If… I know it can be confronting, if you… um, confronting to explore a new facet of…”

“Your shrink skills stink, Jackson.”

“I’m just saying, if you’re not used to finding other men attractive, it could be uncomfortable for you to…”

Cam turned, and deliberately looked him up and down. “REALLY not the problem.”

“Oh. Really?” He frowned. “Then what is the problem?”

“The problem is, that I’m the leader of SG1. The leader.”

“…ah.”

“I’m supposed to be impartial. I’m not supposed to fraternise. And I’m definitely not supposed to lose control like that.”

“Right.” Daniel paused. Then shrugged. “Well… Welcome to the Stargate mission, I guess.”

Cam frowned. “What?”

“We’re doing exploratory missions to uncharted planets. Accidental sex with aliens – or accidental sex because of aliens – is a standard part of the whole gig.”

This couldn’t be right. “Hang on. I’ve read every mission report SG1 had, and there was never anything like this.”

“Well, no, you don’t put it in the report,” Daniel conceded. “But team-wide we’ve had… let’s see… at least six or seven ‘incidents’.”

“Really?”

“I’ll show you what to write down.”

Next

It was still raining.

“Three days we’ve been here. Three days! Jackson, next time an alien society needs to do a sacred sun ritual before they’ll open negotiations with us, I want to know in advance, is that clear?”

“It’s not like we have a time limit,” Daniel replied. “I mean, Sam and Teal’c are safe, and being fed – we just can’t take them home. They’ll be fine.”

“Sure, but in the meantime I’m stuck here. Doing jackshit.”

“It’s frustrating.”

“It’s boring.”

Daniel nodded. And then: “We could have sex?” he offered.

“What? No!”

“It’s not like we haven’t done it before.”

Cam waved a hand in dismissal. “That was just the sex chemicals.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. “…just?”

Cam glared at him. “Just.”

“Well, you did say you were bored.”

He didn’t bother answering this – just threw himself back down on his chair. Daniel grinned at him, and went back to writing.

Less than a minute, and Cam folded his arms and said “Okay. For the record, the sex was fine, and you are, objectively, very attractive. Happy?”

Daniel nodded. Then raised an eyebrow again. “But to clarify, you definitely don’t want to have sex.”

“Nope.”

“Okay. …why not?” Cam glared at him. Daniel spread his hands, innocently. “Just for information.”

“Because a good team leader doesn’t go around seducing his teammates.”

I offered sex to you. Which would make you the seducee. Or should that be ‘seductee’?” he said to himself, looking thoughtful, and reached for another book.

Cam saw the opportunity for guilt-free sex with a teammate slipping through his fingers. He stood up, marched over to Daniel, and took the book out of his hands. Daniel was already wearing the abstracted expression he always had when he was thinking about adjectival forms. He looked up, vaguely. “What’s going on?”

Cam pulled him to his feet. “I’m seducing you. Shut up.”

And Daniel shut up.

Later

Carter arrived back at the rendevous.

“All good, Colonel?” he asked.

She nodded. “We’ve found a – well, it’s basically an ‘inn’ – with three bedrooms available. They said we’re welcome.”

“Right,” Cam nodded. “You take one room, Teal’c can take the second. And I’ll bunk with Jackson.”

Carter looked at him, her face carefully blank.

“So that you and Dr Jackson can have some informal interaction suitable for building morale …Colonel?”

She knew. Of course she knew.

Well, there were some questions he should ask. And then he was going to slink away and die of embarrassment.

No time like the present. “Uh… Carter. I was hoping you could give me some feedback concerning my… leadership of the team.”

She raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.

Cam crossed his arms over his chest, and kept going. “I know it can be tricky to raise concerns with someone who’s technically leading you – even if you’re the same rank – but I think it’s important that you feel free to bring up any… issues you have.”

Carter was still looking politely blank.

“For instance, if you think I’m not being impartial…” he prompted.

“I think you do a good job of keeping your personal likes and dislikes to yourself.”

“And I’d want you to tell me if you thought my behaviour was at all …inappropriate.”

Carter smiled at him. “You haven’t told me anything that would be cause for concern, Colonel. And I’m not going to ask.”

Also

Vala figured it out immediately.

She sat down next to him in the mess and said “So you seem to have been enjoying yourself.”

Quick recon. The mess: empty. The doors: open.

“That’s not really something I want to discuss right here.”

“Really? Why? Overall fear of intimacy, or is it Daniel specifically?”

“Keep your voice down!” he hissed.

“Oh relax. Cultivate a reputation for being a known liar and no-one will believe a word you say. Watch this.” She sauntered to the doorway, and looked out. “Ah, General!” she called. Vala waited until Landry got closer, then placed an encouraging hand on his shoulder and walked him inside. “Earth etiquette question for you. You see, Cameron here has been keeping my Daniel’s bed warm for him while I’ve been away, and I was wondering what an appropriate thank-you gift might be. Should I, for instance, offer him some sex myself? Or would that be too forward, do you think?”

The General’s face was a picture.

He said: “Welcome back to Stargate Command, Miss Mal Doran.” and then he backed out of the room, swiftly.

She watched him go, with a smile, then turned back to Cam. “You see?”

Ever since Vala had returned a few days ago, Cam had been trying to figure out what he should be doing. It was quite obvious that their thing – whatever it was – was outranked by what Daniel and Vala had. Daniel found her exasperating, and untrustworthy …and had barely left her side.

Now, he cleared his throat, and said “Look, I don’t want to step on any toes.”

Vala looked puzzled. “The floor looks perfectly normal. No… stray toes lying around.”

“No, I mean: I don’t want to get in your way. You and Jackson clearly have… something special going on.”

She nodded. “True.”

“So – I’ll back off.”

Vala frowned, and stole several of his fries. “I don’t see why. You’re clearly making Daniel happy, and that’s good, isn’t it?”

“Uh… I suppose so, but…”

“So, you’re welcome to keep on sleeping together. As long as I – occasionally – get to watch.”

Cam choked on his fries. Vala grinned and stole a couple more.

Finally

Vala was fast asleep on one side of the bed. Cam was wide awake on the other side. And Daniel was in the middle, drifting off.

Cam stared at the ceiling for far too long. Then he looked over and asked, “We’re okay, aren’t we, Jackson?”

“Hmm, wha?” Daniel blearily opened half an eye.

Cam repeated the question: “We’re okay, right?”

“Yeah… whatever. Sleeping. Shh.” He closed his eyes again.

A few seconds passed.

Then Daniel opened his eyes properly, looked across at Cam, and said matter-of-factly: “Yes we’re okay.” He promptly went back to sleep.

And that was good enough for now.
