If I say "the Five Find-Outers and Dog", does that mean anything to any of you?
They're from a series of mystery novels by Enid Blyton - aimed at kids who are about 9–12 years old. The "Five Find-Outers" are Fatty (the brains of the group), Larry and Daisy (brother and sister), and Pip and Bets (also brother and sister). The "dog" is Buster, who belongs to Fatty.
Together, they solve mysteries (arson, burglary, anonymous letters, forgery, and so forth) in their little village, to the great annoyance of the bumbling village policeman.
Anyway, the whole thing takes place in the 1940s. And I would love to write a fanfic set in the 1960s. (But I probably never will. Instead, I'm putting it here.)
Our story opens with Pip, now working as a private investigator. The Hiltons (Pip and Bets) and the Daykins (Larry and Daisy) have kind of fallen out of touch, ever since Bets broke up with Larry and ran off to become a newspaper photographer. But now, Larry is contacting Pip for investigative help with a problem of Daisy's (or possibly Daisy is contacting Pip for help with Larry? not sure, really).
So Pip starts investigating. And runs into trouble. And finally decides "You know, the person I really need in this situation is Fatty."
Fatty did not, in fact, become a world-class famous detective (as was his ambition in the books), but instead used his remarkable talent for disguising himself to become a renowned stage actor. He is, however, happy to take time out of his performance schedule to help Pip solve his little problem.
And so, the Five Find-Outers are on the trail once again...
