I suddenly want to write a medieval, low fantasy epic. You know the one: where Our Hero leaves the farmstead on an epic quest to find their destiny and save the world.

Only... in this case, Our Hero is a thirty-something woman, who leaves the kids behind on the farmstead (with some other adults, don't worry), and straps on the two-month infant so she can take him with her, on her epic quest to find her destiny and save the world.

The desire to write this story is not purely because I am a thirty-something woman with young children. It's also because the premise immediately makes me react with "But... why? Why would she do that? What would be important enough that she'd leave her kids behind? And how? How would she save the world while also lugging a baby around with her?"

I suddenly have plot. Hmm...

I always like the idea of a Chosen One who denied the call and it left her alone for a couple of decades. And then suddenly the call comes back, because all the Sweet Young Thangs who answered the call didn't have the life experience to successfully defeat the darkness and one by one they fell.

I may have plotbunnies on this point. :)

Ooh yes, and please make it realistic- I remember reading books in my youth where a young heroine is travelling for months on end, and wondering how she coped with her menstrual cycle, especially around a whole travelling group of men. How will your heroine cope with her infant son's reflux, endless nappies (I can just see her with a stinking soggy child strapped to her for most of the day...), refusal to sleep, crying at night to alert the evildoers to her position...
And why on earth would someone who must surely be barely sleeping more than a few hours at a time during the night, be wanting to travel? It must be a doozy of a calling! :-)

I remember an author once saying that the reason why the heroes are so often children/young adults is because they have no attachments to keep them from going out adventuring the same way that older people typically do. Not to mention they rarely have the wisdom to go, "that's dumb, so I won't try".
