Criteria for this list:
- It features a romance between some main characters.
- I have seen it, and remember the plot.
Snow White
She’s in a coma, he kisses her, she wakes up, they get married. The end.
Are we shown why they like each other? Nope.
Is it believable? Not in the least.
Will they live happily ever after? Doubtful.
The Jungle Book
Hey, girls exist!
Are we shown why they like each other? She is a girl. Ergo, he must now live in the man village.
Is it believable? Yeah…
Will they live happily ever after? The dude was raised by wolves. Unless she has very low standards…
Sleeping Beauty
They sing a song together, and now must get married. Now – I love this movie, and love this song, and it’s all awesome. But still…
Are we shown why they like each other? Not at all. Although their singing voices mesh well.
Is it believable? No.
Will they live happily ever after? Probably not.
The Princess and the Frog
Industrious woman and wastrel prince turn into frogs, spend the night together, and clearly must now be married.
Are we shown why they like each other? Not really. They just… spend time around each other and decide they’re in love. Not sure why.
Is it believable? Not so much.
Will they live happily ever after? Doubt it. They’re not very compatible.
Frozen
They meet, they snark, they save the kingdom, they kiss.
Are we shown why they like each other? …sort of? Very snarky interaction, which is fun.
Is it believable? Yep. I buy it.
Will they live happily ever after? Only if they take it slow and get to know each other. Which looks likely.
Cinderella
A couple of hours of intimate conversation at the ball.
Are we shown why they like each other? No. We see none of their conversation. But apparently it was great.
Is it believable? I think so. After all, Cinderella is desperate to escape her current circumstances. And the prince needs to deal with his crazy father’s desperate longing for grandchildren. It’s a good way out for both of them.
Will they live happily ever after? They might. I like to think that both of them are very practical people who are making the best of things, and choosing marriage as a pragmatic step. If they realise that marriage needs work, and choose to put the effort in, they’ve got a good chance.
Lady and the Tramp
High class gal meets guy from the wrong side of the tracks.
Are we shown why they like each other? A little. He tries to demonstrate the benefits of being free, she tries to show him the value of duty and family. They interact, is the thing – beyond the basics of “Me man. You woman. LOVE.”
Is it believable? Yeah, definitely. They’ve got a nice emotional arc.
Will they live happily ever after? I think it’s quite possible.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Pongo tangles them up in his leash, and a meet-cute ensues. Fade to black.
Are we shown why they like each other? Not really. But they’re cute together.
Is it believable? Yes – because of the fade to black. We can imagine as much getting-to-know-you time as we wish.
Will they live happily ever after? They already are. (Assuming owning a bazillion dogs is your idea of bliss.)
The Lion King
They were kids together. Then Elton John got hold of their soundtrack.
Are we shown why they like each other? As friends? Yes. As a couple? No.
Is it believable? The childhood friends thing helps. I think it works.
Will they live happily ever after? Yep. They’re well suited.
Robin Hood
Are we shown why they like each other? Not at all. They barely interact.
Is it believable? They were “kids together”! And not just friends, but an actual couple! They were in love already! YES, it’s believable.
Will they live happily ever after? Absolutely.
The Little Mermaid
Instant love from her, three days with a weird chick who can’t use forks for him.
Are we shown why they like each other? Yes, strangely enough. Eric actually rejects the dream of the woman who sang to him (Ariel) so that he can pursue the odd but real and lovely woman he’s been hanging out with (also Ariel). He legitimately likes the stuff they’ve been doing together – and we’ve seen a lot of it.
Is it believable? Rather fast – but yes.
Will they live happily ever after? I imagine Ariel is already familiar with royal life from growing up in a royal court, so her expectations are probably reasonable. I reckon they’ve got a shot.
Mulan
She might have lied to him, but then she saved his country. He’d hit that.
Are we shown why they like each other? Not really. They don’t interact that much – and don’t interact romantically at all.
Is it believable? They got to know each other during the war, and clearly get along well.
Will they live happily ever after? Signs point to yes.
Tarzan
“Me… Jane. You… Tarzan.”
Are we shown why they like each other? Absolutely. They spend significant time together, and learn about each other’s interests.
Is it believable? For a story about a guy raised by gorillas? Surprisingly so.
Will they live happily ever after? …Actually, most likely scenario involves Jane dying of some weird jungle bug in the next couple of years. But, romantically speaking, yes, I think they stand a real chance.
Aladdin
She lies to him about her identity, he lies to her about his identity… clearly it’s true love.
Are we shown why they like each other? A bit. They are both good at thinking on their feet and working together as a team. And they like hanging out.
Is it believable? They’re clearly enjoying themselves together. Which is nice. But they don’t really know that much about each other.
Will they live happily ever after? I think they probably will. They’re a good match.
Beauty and the Beast
Is is Stockholm Syndrome or true love? You decide.
Are we shown why they like each other? Yes, I think so. They argue well, they take an interest in each other, and they enjoy hanging out.
Is it believable? It seems to happen over the space of several weeks. I think it’s a fairly natural transition.
Will they live happily ever after? Definitely.
Tangled
Cynical thief meets naive kidnap victim, and shenaningans ensue.
Are we shown why they like each other? Absolutely. We see them getting to know each other, influencing each other, and risking their lives for each other. And it all feels wonderfully natural.
Is it believable? Definitely. Three days to fall for each other, and then a couple of years before they decide to get married, which works. And they clearly like each other as people, and care about each other.
Will they live happily ever after? Of course!
(I’m somewhat obsessed with Disney at the moment. Is it noticeable?)
