So, my daughter was given a Buffy picture book for her birthday:

My first thought: AWESOME.
My second thought: Clearly not canon-compliant. Like, at ALL. Grrr.
My third thought: This illustrator clearly knows the show very, very well.
Okay, to expand on thought 2:
- It's set when Buffy is 8 years old.
- She lives in Sunnydale.
- Willow and Xander are friends with her.
- Giles is the school librarian.
- She is already a Slayer.
So... not even close on the canon.
But...
If you look at the image I linked above, you'll notice a few familiar characters. So far, throughout the book, I've found: Clem, Dracula, Olaf the Troll, the Gentlemen, a Fish monster (from Swim Team), Gachnar, Sweet, the Dummy, the Loan Shark, the Insect Lady, D'Hoffryn, a werewolf, and several other monsters I'm sure I'll identify eventually.
The artist has also accurately depicted Buffy's bedroom and front hallway, and included Mr Gordo, Mr Pointy, and the Vampyr book from the pilot.
Okay, so technically, she could have just spent a long time on Google Image searches of the show. But... no. No she didn't. The artist REALLY knows BtVS.
Why do I say this? Two reasons.
1: At the school library, Xander is reading a comic book and Willow is reading all about magic. At the sleepover party, Clem and the Loan Shark end up playing poker while Sweet is dancing to music. Also, the teeny-tiny werewolf is playing guitar - and at first it confused me that the werewolf was so teeny, until I realised that the werewolf is Oz, and therefore also has to be kid sized. And teeny tiny Oz!werewolf is playing guitar!
...in other words, the artist knows enough about what the characters are like to get fun in-character visuals.
2: There's a Dorothy Hamill poster on Buffy's bedroom wall. I rest my case, m'lud.
