Day 5: Least Favorite Female Character

While there are an awful lot of one-episode characters I could pick on, I think that'd be cheating. So, for female characters who made more than one appearance... and weren't the villain...

Miss Calendar. Sorry, guys.

I mean, I thought she was nice. And I liked her being around. But... meh?

I only really liked her because of Giles's reactions to her. I liked watching him blush, and get awkward, and not know how to deal with her. And, when she died, I was upset – because of what it did to Giles. Not because of what it did to her.


AtS
Here's the thing. There is often a big difference between how characters are on AtS, and how they are on BtVS. They're going through different things, they're dealing with different apocalypses, and they're being written by different writers. Sometimes, a character can be split neatly into their Sunnydale-half and their LA-half, without much in common between them.

...I loathed Cordelia on AtS. Especially after season 1.

It's a bit unfair of me, because I quite liked her on BtVS. All the props to snarky, high-school Cordy. She's awesome. But Ms Vision-having, Angel-comforting, Heart-of-the-team, Saint Cordelia herself is a total pain, and makes me roll my eyes almost every time she's on screen.

Can't stand her. And in my episode rewatch she's about to end up in an end-of-pregnancy coma, so HA.

I like AtS!Cordelia, but I consider the third season to be character assassination. Demon ascencion or not (preferably not :P), Cordelia is not that much of a sweetie.

The third season was dreadful for Cordelia. It just... I don't know why the writers decided to start writing her like that, but it really didn't work for me.

I've seen it happen many times, and it's a danger that particularly seems to threaten flawed female characters. See also what was happening to Fred in season 5, or what happened to Chloe Sullivan, a marvelously driven, petty, jealous character on Smallville until she suddenly flipped a switch and became perfect supporto-girl in the later seasons.

Very refreshing to see some anti-Cordelia on LJ. I like Cordelia in S1 and early S2 of AtS- although, it's annoying that her selfish actions are just painted as adorbs without any darkness. See her leaving Faith for Angel and just tortured!Wesley to deal with after she scammed a paid vacation out of Angel because *she* didn't want to deal with anticipated Faith-murderous violence.

But she's out and out infuriating on every level once Angel decides to make her his Romantic Lead in late S2.

Disagree on Jenny. I like her a lot.

Exactly my thoughts about AtS Cordelia.
Besides, Angel going evil was cool. Willow going evil was cool. Wesley going evil (ok, more "dark" than "evil") was cool. Cordelia going evil... was very lame.

I think it's partly because Cordelia's arc just... wasn't going there. Hence the having to force it by having her get possessed. Whereas Willow's arc (and Wesley's) was so natural, and entirely in character, so the writers could just go with it and make it awesome.

It wasn't even her. Cordelia didn't really exist in season 4. First we got amnesiac Cordy, then possessed Cordy, then comatose Cordy.
