Hey, at least you get rejection letters! Most of the jobs I apply for, I just never hear anything at all (even when I've interviewed with them!), so it's like, "Okay, it's been a few weeks... I guess I didn't get that one..."
I'll see if I can dig up some links to reputable forums where self-published authors hang out, you might find info there. I've seen them around, just don't have them handy atm.
Here's one: http://absolutewrite.com/. The people on the forum are very knowledgeable and trustworthy, friendly and good at catching scammers, they might be able to tell you where to start. Most of them seem to "swap work" right now, but as self-publishing becomes more professional, I think paying editors for their work will become more common. I know I'll want to pay a professional editor for her services if I end up self-publishing.
