Here's some more Jack/Sam. Because I love them.
Title: Fair Warning
Rating: G
Word Count: 495
Pairing: Jack/Sam
Summary: Jack has made plans.
Fair Warning
Two weeks since she’d broken up with Pete, and she still hadn’t told anyone. It was just too awkward – and, in one case, came with far too many unspoken implications.
So she told Daniel. And sheepishly requested that, if he gossiped about her behind her back, that would allow the news to spread without her ever actually having to spread it.
Jack enters her lab in his usual manner – hands in pockets, clearly bored and wanting to hang out. She lifts her eyes and smiles at him – “Hello, sir.” – and then returns to her notes. Past experience tells her that he’ll request an update (“Whatcha doin?”), feign incomprehension (“Carter! In English!”), then make a parting comment (“I’ll leave you to your… very fascinating nanoparticles.”) and leave to pester Daniel.
But then he shuts the door. And Sam pauses – because this is not the usual routine. Something is up. She raises an eyebrow, questioning. “Sir?”
“Just want to make sure we’re not overheard, Carter. I’ve got some highly classified intel for you.”
She puts down her work, and gives him her full attention. “Yes, sir?”
Oddly, he doesn’t start talking, but instead crosses his arms awkwardly in front of him, and stands there. He opens his mouth – “Carter–” – and then hesitates again.
“Sir?”
“Mmm?”
“The highly classified intel?”
“Yes! That!” He uncrosses his arms, and lasts all of half a second before plunging his hands back into his pockets again. Then he says “I just wanted to let you know about my upcoming schedule. Specifically, June fourteenth and fifteenth.”
She doesn’t know what to say, so settles again for “Yes, sir.”
Jack picks up a pen from her desk and starts twirling it around in his fingers, not looking at her, as he continues: “On June fourteenth, I will be resigning from my position at the SGC, and getting ready to take up a new position in Washington.”
Sam starts to interrupt – with “What?” or “You’re leaving?” or “But, sir–” all poised on the edge of her tongue – but he ignores her and continues doggedly on.
“Which means, Carter, that on June fifteenth I’m going to ask you out on a date.”
Her brain short-circuits.
She sits there, staring, barely hearing the colonel’s repeated “Carter? … Carter?” until a soft “…Sam” brings her back to reality.
“Um. Yes.” She blinks, and then repeats, “Yes. Yes, sir.”
Jack perches on the stool next to her, and looks at her seriously. “I don’t want to rush you, Carter. And I don’t want to pressure you.”
Sam just nods.
“But the moment I can ask – I’m going to ask.” He stands and shrugs. “Just thought I’d give you fair warning.”
He’s almost out the door before Sam speaks. “Sir?”
He pauses and looks back at her.
“Kerry Johnson?”
He grins. “She told me to get off my ass and ask you out, Carter.”
She laughs. “Really?”
Jack nods. “June fifteenth.” And he leaves her to her thoughts.
