When it comes right down to it, it's all about the dragonflies.
To explain, briefly:
- Lots of little girls decorate with butterflies.
- I decorate with dragonflies.
This is not because I dislike butterflies, but because I dislike the convention of butterflies. I am a little girl - hence I must like butterflies. No thought is given to why I'd like butterflies, or whether liking butterflies could say something about me (apart from being a little girl), because everyone likes butterflies, so why wouldn't I like them too?
...hence, stubborn 10 year old Mez decided, very firmly, that she liked dragonflies instead. And ended up with dragonfly boxes, earrings, teacups, pencilcases...
The thing is, this doesn't just apply to butterflies. It applies to lots and lots of different bits of my life.
- Lots of girls have cute kitten posters on their walls.
- I have a poster of a funky fully-grown cat.
- Lots of girls like pink.
- I like purple.
- Everyone is making pretty cushions, out of beautiful fabric covered in lace, in art class.
- I grab the most out-there, bizarre fabric I can find... and then make a pretty, lace-covered cushion with it.
- I'm supposed to buy black heels for a job interview.
- I very nearly almost buy purple heels instead. (And then cave, buy the black ones, and spend the next five years wishing I'd got the purple ones.)
I'm very into conventional tastes, but with a slightly unconventional twist. And I'd never really realised it before, but, for the most part, my tastes are all about the dragonflies.
