In a move that could shake up the entire league, Pittsburgh and Boston have agreed on a deadline deal: Frankie for Little Joe, straight up. Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is set to trade gorillas with Boston's Franklin Park Zoo.

Frankie, Pittsburgh's 7-year-old male western lowland gorilla, will head to Boston, and in exchange, Boston will send 33-year-old Little Joe the silverback back to Pittsburgh, according to the zoo. This news has sparked some classic fun-having on social media. An actual news story about the trade, if you're not into fun.

This and that

Friday is Theo day. We have our toddler grandson every Friday and hand him back Saturday morning.

This is a good arrangement for all parties.  He's at the age where he loves having books read to him and is starting to point to dogs and cats and say 'doh' and 'ca'.

He likes going for walks- we took him over the heath today, partly in a pushchair and partly toddling along on his own feet.  He loves picking up sticks and playing with them, the occasional fir cone also provides entertainment.  He's pleasingly interested when I show him buttercups and ferns, etc. and tell him their names.  Today, we went over the board walk on our local mini-bog- stamping on the boards makes an interesting sound that he loves to test out.  Fluffy caterpillars of fallen willow seed heads were duly played with and interesting grass stems.

We got back at just the right time to take his morning sleep (often quite a long one).

Granny and grandad are settling down to catch up on computer stuff while he's asleep.

So, I'm posting here, then catch up on a couple of morris-related emails, and then grab a snack. One of the annoying side effects of the kind of diabetes I have is that I've lost too much weight due to poor absorption of carbs.  So small meals between meals become necessary.

The catch is that it can be hard to find things I want to eat.

Every year the folks at Denali National Park in Alaska adopt a litter of sled dog puppies. The cutesplosion for 2026 has been unleashed on a live webcam for the world to see.

They're part of a historic breeding program for Alaskan sled dogs dating back to 1922. It's dedicated to preserving the historic Native working dog tradition, especially now that they've largely been replaced by other means of transportation. The ones at Denali are still doing their jobs, though! Motor vehicles are prohibited in the park and, particularly in winter, they run about 1500 miles each transporting park rangers. They also participate in sledding demonstrations for visitors. (This post is technically a duplicate but the previous post was almost ten years ago, so clearly it's new puppers)

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Montreal, famous for it's strip clubs, is facing a potential labour shortage on the upcoming F1 race weekend. A sex work strike planned for May 23 would see workers strip clubs and massage parlours walk off the job. They currently work for tips alone, not wages, and have to pay a significant portion of that money back to the club.

The F1 race in Montreal regularly draws over 100,000 tourists to the city.

BUFFY: (looks at Angel) Because—OK, I'm cookie dough. I'm not done baking. I'm not finished becoming whoever the hell it is I'm gonna turn out to be. I make it through this, and the next thing, and the next thing, and maybe one day I turn around and realize I'm ready. I'm cookies. And then, you know, if I want someone to eat— (eyes go wide as she catches herself) or enjoy warm, delicious cookie me, then...that's fine. That'll be then. When I'm done.

The Creator's Grace, Volume 1 by Ning Yuan (translated by Shigure and Serena):

thoughts (and some speculation) on volume 1 )

At the World's Mercy, Volume 1 by Ning Yuan (translated by Ah Yang*):

I haven't finished this one yet )

I'll have to double check to be certain, but I'm 90% sure changes weren't made from Rosmei's previews of The Creator's Grace and At the World's Mercy and the printed volumes. There's no footnotes in any of the volumes, which surprises me (I'd assumed there'd be at least a couple in At the World's Mercy).

There's just a little over 24 hours left before the tagset closes for nominations! (countdown)

Signups continue through Sunday evening in the Pacific time zone (countdown to signups closing), so there's still time to join up if you're interested!

So far, 37 people have signed up, and I'm so excited to be doodling with everyone. I can't wait to see who signs up over the weekend. <3

Nomination Query 2

  • There are still two outstanding queries from the first nomination query post.

Nominators for Detective Conan, and Crossover Fandom: any Requested Character with Wings, please let us know how you'd like us to handle your tags.

  • Original Facehugger Concept Sketch - Dan O’Bannon
Creator’s Choice of Subject (Facehugger Concept Sketch)

Nominator, when I queried this tag with my group of fandom tag helpers, none of us could decide what "subject" referred to. Some of us thought "subject" referred to someone being face-hugged, and some of us thought that "subject" referred to the facehugger itself (and one of us thought it might be the egg).

To remove ambiguity, could we reword this tag? If you need more than one tag to cover all of the possibilities you are interested in, we can add them all to the tagset for you!

To kick us off: Ocean Man (but it's Goth Rock) by Joshua Woo.

Joshua Woo does lots of these type of mashups. I tried all of these and came away very entertained: Take On Me In The Style Of The Cure Rebel Yell In The Style Of The Cure Let It Go From Frozen In The Style Of The Cure Where The Streets Have No Name In The Style Of David Bowie Kiss In The Style of Bob Dylan What If Seven Nation Army Was A 70s Funk Song If Barry Gibb Of The Bee Gees Sang Great Gig in the Sky Previous cover song compilations I made for Metafilter: March 2026 January 2026 On to the main program! Ocean Man - Ween Ocean Man (but it's Goth Rock) by Joshua Woo Ocean Man by Albie and Tj Ocean Man by Sophie Josephine Ocean Man by Jonas Richardson (beautifully demented a cappella) Ocean Man by The Acoustic-Jukebox Erie PA Ocean Man by xDEFCONx (I think it was programmed with Synthesia) Ocean Man by TheDreRock Ocean Man by kerobit Ocean Man by Brandon McCool And last, but not least, the Ocean Man will stir up emotions you wouldn't understand, emotions you couldn't understand, emotions you shouldn't understand, in this 4-minute version: Ocean Man by WAX//WANE Psycho Killer - The Talking Heads Get ready to so, so ruin this song, because everybody has a cover of it. I swear I tried to only pick out good & interesting ones here Psycho Killer by Pacifica Psycho Killer by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain -- this is performed at the Albert Hall. This is pretty awesome. Psycho Killer by Origgami (Matheus Vps) (a cappella) Psycho Killer by Dolche -- this is totally differenter than the others Psycho Killer by Xenia Rubinos -- equally differenter! Psycho Killer by Marcos Viana -- just a Brazillian man with a guitar and no shirt, but it's one of the most distinctive & compelling interpretations Psycho Killer by The Bobs (a cappella) (album recording) Psycho Killer by The Bobs (a cappella) with Iso Dance. If that last one wasn't insane enough, this was performed live on the 1988 Smothers Brothers revival show. I think it's incompetent that the cameras can't seem to pay attention to the dancers. Psycho Killer by Xiu Xiu Psycho Killer by Black Mighty Wax (Lounge/Disco) Psycho Killer by Power-Haus Creative Psycho Killer by Blair Crimmins and The Hookers (Dixieland) Psycho Killer by Velvet Revolver Psycho Killer by Eyes Lips Eyes Psycho Killer by Smokin' Mojo Music Psycho Killer by Adora Psycho Killer by The Angers Psycho Killer by Sebastian Haff (Rockabilly) Psycho Killer by Bruce Lash (Jazz singing) Psycho Killer by Palmyra (Bluegrass) Psycho Killer by Cage the Elephant (rock/acoustic) Psycho Killer by Seán Tobin -- this kid isn't that much bigger than his ukelele Psycho Killer by Fionnuar (acoustic w/ mandolin, whiskey, and Guiness) Psycho Killer by Rafaella Tavares (seems like R&B singing to me?) Psycho Killer by Michael Woods (acoustic with live looping - sounds similar to the rendition on Stop Making Sense) Psycho Killer by Jan Gregersen Psycho Killer by Caravan of Thieves (gypsy/swing) Psycho Killer by Calling All Cars Psycho Killer by Pick It Up's (ska/reggae) Psycho Killer on Ukelele Tuesday -- I'm not going to claim this sounds good, but don't you want to behold several dozen people packing a Dublin bar, strumming their ukeleles in unison to this song? Psycho Killer by The Wheatsheaf Ukulele Collective Psycho Killer by The Cash Cows -- (um, I don't know how to classify this. It might be the only one here with harmonica) Psycho Killer by French Fries -- because I believe the children are our future Psycho Killer by PECULIAR (CW: imagery in video suggests blood & corpses) If Psycho Killer was Old-School Hill-Country Blues by Justin Johnson (guitar instrumental) Psycho Killer by Mick Beaulieu (instrumental surf rock) Psycho Killer by Karin and The Ugly Barnacles Psycho Killer by The Coneheads Psycho Killer by Coke Head Hipsters -- in case the above version from The Coneheads was too slow for you Psycho Killer by Mystic Bowie's Talking Dreads (ska/reggae) Bonus: Acoustic Version of Psycho Killer by Talking Heads was on the B-side of the original single. Prominently features Arthur Russell on cello, and some alternate lyrics Previously on Metafilter: new official video for Psycho Killer released in 2025 Rex's Blues - Townes Van Zandt Everybody seems to bring their A game when they cover this one. Quoted from Lyric Genius:
[Rex's Blues was] written for Rex "Wrecks" Bell, Townes' friend, former bandmate, and owner of the Old Quarter venue in Houston... According to Wrecks, "Townes could have written it about himself, too." Townes would never let Wrecks play when he performed the song, forcing him to just listen.
Some loose change: while searching for the TVZ covers, YouTube suggested this cover for me: Undone In Sorrow (Ola Belle Reed) by The Grand Old Echo which led me to listen to the Grand Old Echo perform one of their own songs: Naomi, with an unfortunate level of background noise, and yet I love the energy of the performance. Most of the Songs from Sweet Revenge by John Prine Sweet Revenge by Youngtree and the Blooms Sweet Revenge by Ark Life Please Don't Bury Me by The Beggars Please Don't Bury Me by Fret Killer Please Don't Bury Me by Cle to the Oh Please Don't Bury Me by Jackson Emmer ft. the Roaring Fork River Christmas in Prison by Kirk Michaels Christmas in Prison by Carson and Skylar McKee Christmas in Prison by Chris Canterbury Christmas in Prison by The Local Honeys Dear Abby by Joseph Turkot Onomatopoeia by Ethan Coomer -- plus Saigon from a different John Prine album Mexican Home by Omar Torrez -- Oh yes! He puts his own stamp on it but also acknowledges the funky rhythm of the original. Mexican Home by Lost Cenzontles A Good Time by The Seldom Scene Fade Into You - Mazzy Star Fade Into You by The Running Mates Fade Into You by Au Revoir Simone -- or we could just say it's by The Cure Fade Into You by Sierra Eagleson Fade Into You by Manchester Orchestra Fade Into You by The Rubens Fade Into You by Valerie June Fade Into You by J Mascis Fade Into You by Døvydas, Mia, & Kira -- song starts about 4:00. Before that is Kira explaining the song since Døvydas claims he's never heard it before. Fade Into You by Malenka ft. some cows at sunset Fade Into You by Eva Sky Fade Into You by Nicole Alexis Fade Into You by Whitehorse Fade Into You by Mina Fade Into You by Jian Ross Fade Into You by Jesse Marie Villa Fade Into You by Holly Henry Fade Into You by The Step Beats (reggae)-- half of me thinks this is an abomination, and the other half thinks it works great Fade Into You by Eversame Some bonus that popped up while I was searching: Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star and Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine cover Golden Hair By Syd Barrett Mazzy Star live for radio in Paris Oct 1993 -- 13 songs. Going Home demo ~1985 -- 7 songs recorded in studio. Going Home consisted of Hope Sandoval (vocals) and Sylvia Gomez (guitar). Produced by Dave Roback. Some songs would later be performed by Mazzy Star. Lots more notes on the video's page. To play us out, let's go to Skatune Network, where JER plays Ska/Punk versions of: pop songs, songs from animation, video game music, and songs suggested by their Patreon supporters. They are a one-person band whose energy is always turned to 11. I enjoyed these examples: Space Oddity (David Bowie) I Wanna be Sedated (The Ramones) I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston) Giant Woman (Steven Universe)

My older brother J. announced his plans to come to Manhattan this Saturday with his child A., and no mention of his wife E. I can't say I'm at all surprised at that.

I'm looking forward to it a reasonable amount. I'd like to get to know A., though as she's quite a ways from talking, it'll be a while before much of anything can happen there.

What I found odd on the phone call where he told me was the number of times J. used 'um.' Easily two or three times a sentence, and I'm not exaggerating. I'm someone who pays attention to what I say - I realized today I'd used "just" as an intensity modifier when I hadn't needed to qualify my statement at all, and I'm going to try to pay attention to that going forward, and I know what people say, and I still struggle to internalize that because of how much effort I put forth. And I'm not even very good at this.

You don't have to be registered to volunteer to be on a panel, but you do need an account at https://wiscon.net

(You do have to register for Wiscon this year in order to actually be on a panel, but if you're not sure to want to attend, you don't have to decide that before volunteering to be on a panel.)

Okay, I don't know how to feel about this one. On the one hand, I can't help but feel that this shouldn't be made. This isn't entertainment and it certainly shouldn't be for copaganda. On the other hand, I thought they did a shockingly good job of it.

It's about Bruce McArthur, a serial killer who preyed for years on middle-aged, poor, brown gay men in the Village, while the cops turned a blind eye. If you don't want to read about that, who could blame you?

I almost forgot to note this. We put the mosquito traps out, a few days ago.

The one in the back didn’t get very many last year, even though it seemed like a good spot. Even after we added CO2 there. We need to pick a new location but so far we have put it in the same spot. The challenge is that there is no convenient electrical outlet there. Maybe I can get a neighbor to host it.

The one under the front porch got really full. I want to refill the CO2 tank and try it on that one.
