This is totally new news to me.

Truly, LJ is an educational place.

You lot are weird.

Now I want fairy bread and I'm not even sure we've got sprinkles.

Heh! I've had fairy bread, but that's because the friends we stayed with on our visit there wanted us to have the full Australian experience, so they served us some of their childhood favorites.

That looks positively revolting to me. But my grandchildren would probably eat that candy-sprinkled toast.

It looks like it would be quite popular, I imagine.

Still ... ewwwww.

That is quite possibly the cutest open-faced sandwich ever. Also possibly the sweetest.

This appears at least tangentially related to cinnamon toast, the main difference being that cinnamon toast is.. well, toasted, and has cinnamon sugar instead of sprinkles.

Yum. Gotta try that.

We used to have this at parties I went to as a child in the 70's and 80's in the UK as a child, but we didn't call it fairy bread and I've not seen it since at the parties my kids attend.

My husband thought I was weird for trying to instigate it at our kids birthday parties.

(And OMG was it delicious.)

Although our was normally into strips rather than triangles.

I've never heard of that but it sure does look pretty.

We used to make chocolate toast growing up. Actually, my sister still does.

Hmmm. I wonder if I have any nonpareils in the kitchen? I have a pot luck to go to on Saturday, and I could get some squishy white bread before then...

That wikipedia photos is misleading- I have never seen single-colour fairy bread! It's just wrong. And it does look rather icky.

It has to be multicoloured hundreds and thousands, not single-colour flat sprinkles or anything else.

Fairy bread was certainly a staple of every kids' party I ever attended, along with fairy cakes, cordial, chocolate crackles, and jelly...

Yeah, we don't have fairy bread in these parts.

It seems like it might be kind of sugary and gross? but ymmv, I'm sure.

[identity profile] padawanspider.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was thinking "Hmm. Looks like multi-colored cinnamon toast. Without cinnamon."

Anyway, I think I prefer my version... 8 oz of softened cream cheese, 16 oz of Cool Whip, and powdered sugar to taste, blended together and spread on whatever's handy. It's like the ultimate frosting/fruit-dip/spread/cake filling mixture.
