So... Remix...
For the Remix this year, I ended up with the same remixee I had last year. Which meant looking through the same set of fics, trying to find something I'd rejected already...
In the end I found this.
One for Sorrow
The original fic was an instance of Buffy being comforted by Spike, even though he was evil. I wanted to get the same sort of feeling - so I began with a canon instance of that, on the back porch when Joyce was about to go into hospital.
I had Spike offer her cigarettes and whiskey. Inappropriate, but very him.
Two for Mirth
How do you
1) have Buffy in need of comfort
2) have her - in season 5 - accepting comfort from Spike of all people
3) have this involve laughter?
The only time and place I could possibly think of was mid-Winnebago.
Three for Death
"Death", on the other hand, was easy. Especially since this is a time when Buffy really was relying on Spike all the time.
It ended up being much more poetic than the other parts. Spike's POV just seemed to work like that.
Four for Birth
I wrote the fic gradually, filling in sections on my computer as I came up with them.
For the longest time, I had a complete section 3, a complete section 5, and in the middle, this:
I came very close to leaving it like that.
Five for Silver
I love writing things from the POV of Potentials who don't quite know what's going on.
The jokes about Spike eating Potentials came from a Spuffy fic by
the_royal_anna (which I would link to if LJ wasn't being silly), where they did that all the time.
Six for Gold
Yet another of those fill-in-the-blank fics for their final night in that basement.
I decided to make it clear that Buffy wanted to kiss Spike (at least), but leave it very unclear as to what actually happened.
Seven for a Secret, ne’er to be told
I needed Buffy to get drunk with someone. Kennedy seemed to be the perfect person.
Eight for a Wish
I tried quite hard not to write a section from Dawn's POV - largely because I was sure everyone would instantly know it was mine if I did. But this bit had to be her...
There are a few million ways to write a Spuffy reunion fic. (I've written a few different ones.) This time, I knew one thing: I wanted her to yell, and I wanted him to yell right back.
(Buffy complaining that Spike needs "a new swear word" was mainly because I kept on writing "bloody" and couldn't think of a single thing I could have him say instead.)
Nine for a Kiss
The thing is, they don't have any issues that need solving. If they get past the yelling, then things should sort themselves out fairly quickly...
Ten for a Bird you must not miss
The crows rhyme was so useful for writing this. And the fact that it ended with "birds" was even better. It meant I could put the original scene back into the remix - just in very different context.
Instead of a Buffy and Spike who still distrust each other, I wrote them in love. Instead of having a bad week, Buffy's life was going fine. And instead of being normal birds, Buffy was right and they really were demonic.
So - I had fun writing this! Yay!
...and that's about all I have to say.
