I think the give-away might be your use of the word "dumped"...
Sifting is good, but otherwise sprinkling the flour, a tablespoonful at a time, from about 18 inches above the bowl will work. A couple of cuts through with your mixing spoon between each tablespoonful of flour, and you should have the folding almost done when the last ounce or so of flour goes in.
