I'd say the difference between syrup and sauce is that syrup is sweet and sauce is savory. Of course, now I'm trying to work out the difference between chocolate syrup and chocolate sauce... both of which I've had... and there's some kind of reason why they're not the same... *is getting confused*


Maybe that's an American story that's been repeated so often it is believed to be true, but surely someone Italian would have stepped in by now and contradicted it? It was repeated in many different places, including at least one dictionary.
