This. And... also because there are pieces of our cultural story that cannot simply be tossed away. If I can't fit into Lord of the Rings because I'm female, the answer isn't that I should just pick up and move to a new culture that isn't steeped in LOTR. I believe it's my human right to make a place for myself in that cultural narrative.
