the Cap, and his awesome movie
So, I was wanting to write a lengthy meta post exploring superhero movies and why Captain America is so much better than all the other ones that have come out in recent years (especially Thor).
Unfortunately, I have no idea why Captain America is better than the others (Thor included). I just know that it is.
So instead of a lengthy meta post, here is my completely impartial, utterly true, totally unbiased list of reasons why Captain America was great. One of them might be the reason why it was better than all the others, but I'm not sure which one...
1) It was set in the 40s. Woo! (As you might have guessed from my Agatha Christie fansqueeing, I am rather into stories set in the 20s to 40s.)
2) It had the same ridiculous costume from the comics, rather than updating it and making it "cool".
3) It had a really sensible reason for using the ridiculous costume, in the full knowledge that it was, in fact, a ridiculous costume.
4) The main guy was blond. (Unlike Tony Stark.)
5) The main guy had short hair. (Unlike Thor.)
6) The music was really well done.
7) I recognised lots of characters! (By name - I've never actually read a single comic about Captain America, but if you hang around with comicbook fans for long enough, you can still rattle off names like Bucky Barnes and Red Skull without effort.)
8) The main guy was a bit of a dork, and not at all skilled with the ladies. (Much like Peter Parker. I miss my fun Spiderman movies.)
9) Hugo Weaving was in it.
10) So was Tommy Lee Jones.
11) They had lots of clever little things like Steve using a shield in two scenes before he became the Cap. (I like teeny visual gags.)
12) Sergeant Nick Fury was there! (Another comicbook character who I know about by proxy.)
13) They didn't end with AWESOME TRIUMPHANT FINAL BATTLES and HEROIC POWERWALKS.
14) Steampunk submarines!
15) You know the scene in Mulan where she figures out how to get the arrow off the top of the pole when no-one else could? I love that scene. And the same scene happens in this movie. (Well, almost.)
16) The female soldier punches a rude guy in the face.
