Dear Eric: I strongly dislike tattoos, as does everyone in my immediate family. I can't fathom why anybody would want to ruin their skin and risk infections. I was hoping this fad would die and fade away like indoor smoking in a restaurant.

I can hardly bear to eat out anymore at just the sickening thought that someone with tattoos would be cooking, preparing or serving the food and taking out all the enjoyment for me. I know it's a personal choice, but why would anyone be proud to show them off like a really ugly piece of art on an ugly or aging body? Beats me. I don’t know what to do about this.

13. It’s Top Gun Day! Ever seen it (and/or the sequel)?

Yes, quite a few times. In fact, K and I saw it at the theater on our first real date, way back in 1986...We watched the sequel on HBO or some other streaming a couple of years ago.

Old and Strange Vehicle Photos

It's photo Wednesday again, or whatever day you happen to be reading and I happen to be posting. Staying on a schedule has turned out to be harder than I thought, especially since I'm editing one book and still working on the first draft of another.

The subject wasn't hard, though, because as I looked through old photos I found a number that had two things in common: old or unusual vehicles, taken at an inopportune time. In other words, snapshots. For instance, in the above photo I was taking pictures of an unusually large load that was being escorted through town at the time. Then I caught sight of this car, which I've seen drive through town many times, but never managed to capture before.

It was the same in this case. (I was stopped!) I had already brought out my phone to get the car ahead of me, when I saw an Avilla Fire truck go by and tried to get them both in the frame. Which is dumb.

(By the way, these were all taken at least a couple of years ago, so ignore the license plates.)

Elvis has stopped for Starbucks!

This truck, you'll agree, can go for hundreds of miles with that spare tank on its back.

A pretty much normal car, but as I was photographing it, it was photographing me.

I was parked right outside my job as I arrived for my shift. I didn't bother to ask the other dispatchers if anyone could afford it.

This was apparently just being used as a passenger car. I never saw the driver, so I can't tell you if it's his or hearse.

Emily and I both like camping, so I showed her this. But she said no.
In my unpublished novel We Love Trouble, a couple and their dog travel around in a huge RV towed by an equally large pickup truck. I'm thinking of going to a former fire truck as above, but the logistics of maneuvering that thing around are pretty intimidating.

20+ icons of Daphne Bridgerton for round 26 @ tvmovie20in20

I got Daphne Bridgerton for the current round at [community profile] tvmovie20in20 and had quite an interesting time with the iconmaking. Most of the icons wanted to end up blue/purple/pastel so it was fun trying to make them not be, but I do feel like the whole set did end up being in those colours, lol. They are free to take and use. Comments are loved.

Poor geometry in deepfake images

Posted by Nathan Yau

Science profiled Hany Farid, a researcher in digital forensics at the University of California, Berkeley.

An interesting guide in the middle shows how simple geometry can expose a fake image. For example, in the generated image above, the lines connecting the figure to the reflection of the figure should converge at the same point. The lines are off, so the image is fake.

This lesson should be useful for about a week. Maybe a month? It seems that in the not too distant future, we won’t be able to find things that are off with just our eyes. So I’m glad there are people like Farid aiming to make it more difficult to fake reality.

30 Days of Blake's 7 - day 13

Day 13: Favourite guest character

I'll pick three: Bellfriar and Gambrill from Killer for being interesting, fully realised characters whose reactions to and acceptance of Blake showed that there are many good people in the Federation, and Jarriere from Gambit for sheer charm, eccentricity, and his complete ease with Servalan.

All the questions are on Tumblr.

Reaction to the 1st semi final of Eurovision 2026

Well, this was the easier semi final - the blood bath will happen tomorrow.

I was not convinced by the show that Austria put up. The beginning with the little movie and Vicky Leandros was fine, but the hosts were... not good at all, very stiff. I did not expect much from Victoria Swarowski since she's also a host for Let's Dance and well, I'm almost immune to her non-existent hosting qualities by now, but the male host was extremely cringe, my God...

The interval act with the acrobatics group was very good, but the song about Austria/Australia was... a mess, not funny at all. (The Kangaroo fursuit was very good, though.) That quiz show skit also went on faaaar too long.

I'm predicting bad things for the upcoming shows...

Anyway, on to the songs

Ne 'z in ket da gorolliñ

After more than seven months out of work, the degree to which I can afford anything above the bottom rung of Maslow has become truly minimal, but as soon as I discovered Quinquis' eor (2025), a shape-shiftingly electronic, primarily Breton-language album of mermaids and the sea, I leapt for it like it was mackerel. I heard first the all-night love-churn of "Morwreg" (2024), but the irresistible drag sirens of "Dec'h" (2025) sealed the deal.

The copy of Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld's Duck! Rabbit! (2009) which I sent my godchild for his first solstice was familially referred to for years as Baby's First Wittgenstein. I have no idea what Wittgenstein would have made of this cartoon, but I'm impressed.

I am not sure that I am much more than physically extant at the minute. I am clearing the refrigerator and the countertops. I am absorbing as much sunlight as I sleeplessly can. Yesterday kicked off with a doctor's appointment that was too early in the morning to be as unhelpful as it was and only dropped the bar from there, so this afternoon I made sure to secure a half-dozen donuts from the reliable Lyndell's and eat a jam-filled one as soon as I had finished walking home. The neighborhood smelled like alternating drifts of lilac and mulch. I have had the same headache since the weekend and am hoping it is related to the sexing of the trees. The nine o'clock advent of leafblowers to our block was inhumane.
